I'm looking for ideas in costuming that will do a etter job of setting me apart from competition.
I've realized over the months that my strengths can also be weaknesses, and I'm looking for a change in costuming that would help others remember my name with my clothing. For the most part, I use my normal name when I perform. And, my name is pretty "average" sounding. So, when I perform, I find that even if a performance goes really well, people quickly forget my name. Unless I choose to ALWAYS refer to myself as "Mental Dave", my name apparently isn't remembered often enough. This professional "everyman" look can be a benefit (I try to match certain types of appearances of the place I'm performing for), it can also have a larger downfall. This is (no doubt) also partly to do with marketing, taglines and the like, but have you found something that makes people associate something memorable with your name (costuming, hairstyle, etc)? Do you find you have trouble being described as "that great magician we saw with the crazy outfit... Crud... What was his name?" The most telling about this issue was that I had a (what I thought) was a great 5 minute networking conversation with someone several weeks ago, mentioning (what I thought were) memorable things about ourselves. Less than a week later, I managed to get a friend a job working there (she happens to work in the same field his company is in, and they were both looking for work). She told me later, that, oddly enough, he couldn't remember anything about me, where he met me, etc. I lasted about 2 weeks before forgot his name (and face). He was fairly non descript in appearance. He blended in with others quickly too. BUT, I was one of two people in the room in the entertainment field, and I was the only magician. I SHOULD be pretty memorable. This got me thinking. I wear nice clothes when working. I'm a professional looking guy. And I suppose that I have the face or appearance of working everywhere I go. (I'm always asked where things are or if I can get a customer something when I go somewhere fancy...lol) I go with the clean cut professional look. My clothes are fairly stylish sometimes, but not too outlandish or loud. However, I HAVE always tried to have something small that DOES set me apart. Something that someone would hopefully remember (The only thing is, it changes). I wear narrow, red tinted sunglasses, I have a color scheme (yes, I do have a color scheme) that I try to fit; even when I'm not performing. But apparently, it's not fully working yet. I apparently haven't hit that one thing that makes me stand out enough (besides the effects I do)... Personally, I'm not sure if I'm fully ready for using "Mental Dave" as a full time character name, and I enjoy using my real name to describe some of my magic. It's part of who I am. So other than marketing issues (outside of clothing/costuming issues), is there something you use specifically in your costuming that you believe gets an audience to remember who YOU are (as well as your name) as opposed to the other entertainers? If we can find a successful link, then perhaps I can discover what will be different that will work for me. |
