Contract or no contract...it is vitally important to realize that things especially in our biz can come to a screeching halt at any time.
I have found 'this' type of mind frame to be quite cathartic when the end of a gig comes...and it will.'Nothing lasts forever'. Being prepared for that happening and also having a plan for replacing the lost gig..is paramount. No performer is immune from the harsh reality. Pick yourself up and move on...sometimes better things result. Rich |

It would take a lot for me to consider working for a chain. I don't solicit chains for the "new manager every year syndrome". It is soooo much easier developing a strong relationship with a private owner. Last year, I left a bar I had been working one night a week for the past 5 years. His business had dropped significantly due to new clubs opening in the area. I was hired for 3 hours, and it got to the point where I was "busy" for maybe an hour and a half. I felt like I was stealing his money. We mutually agreed that at this time, it was in neither of our best interests for me to keep working there. I could have stayed and gotten paid every week, but I just didn't feel it was the right thing to do.

Here in Texas, illegeals rule the world! They work ANYWHERE and EVERYWHERE!!! It's part of the culture down here. Heck...they built the house that I'm sitting in now as I write this post!
In Texas, they don't just work the back kitchen area. About 30% (just a guess) are quite fluent in English and they are waiters, hostesses, etc. Scary huh.... I don't speak a lick of Spanish nor do I intend to learn. If I was told I had to learn Spanish to play at a restaurant, then I wouldn't work there. Plenty of places out there that don't require that...even out here in Texas!

What restaurant(s) in CT are you at TDK? Well - I work as a waiter, not a table stroller (though I'd love to someday feel I'm good enough to magic for more than just friends ), and this is probably going to be one of those stories about someone who blogs online about his job and ends up getting fired for it, but I work at a Fridays here in CT. I believe in immigration reform, but fact is, there are currently a lot of illegal immigrants working in kitchens. I can't imagine finding many places that don't hire them.

Forgetting the immigrant issue, working as a server is the BEST possible training to be a magician. Trust me you won't regret it.

Oddly enough no. But the audiences are LOL.
I was told if I wanted to work for Americans, go to Mexico!

I went back recently for some extra money in addition to my real job. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble taking that step into doing magic for my tables. I just don't know how to open that door. If I was there as a magician, I tell them as much and that's why I'm there. But I'm not. I'm there to take their order and get their food. Magic doesn't seem to fit into that.

(obviously this is pending your GM is OK with it). Be wary of this however - you WON'T be hired as a magician by the place you waiter at. Why would they? They have a magician at $5.00 and hour when your there as a server. Come to Plainville one Thursday night and see me. We can chat over a beer after I'm done performing and I'll do my best to help alleviate some of the fears your having diffuctly hurdling over.

I have to say one thing also. I would recomend being a server at one place and doing magic at another.
As it has been pointed out the GM really needs to "get it" and most do not so you seem to be lingering unnecessarily. That is bad.
