For those who incorporate accounts from Scripture in your different routines - magic, ballooning, etc. what is your opinion and thoughts regarding the version of the Bible called "The Message"?
I have sampled several passages and it appears to be helpful in conveying the account. I would not use this for "scholarly" efforts as it is a version and not a translation. I have found that it does have a place and is beneficial. Your two mites? peace, phill

I love the Message. Eugene Peterson has done a great job in portraying much of the meaning, and I find it very helpful. Looking at the moving from wooden translations to fluid ones. Yes, it is a version, but Peterson knows Hebrew and Greek well enough that it comes off very well. I like some of the wording in John, "Tented among us." Great imagery.
We used Eugene's introduction, "Read, Pray, Think and Live," as a theme for Bible Camp one year. Four great things to do when reading Scipture. Read it. Pray about it. Think about it, and then live it!!! Another interesting work from the UK is, "The Word on the Street," written by Rob Lacey who reclaims the idea that Scripture was read aloud to the people. I like some of the stuff he does. RevJohn |

Hi Phill:
I love The Message too! I have found it especially useful in reading Paul's letters. Like you mentioned, I think it's great as a supplement to a more literal translation like the NASB. Ron |

Thank you both for the input.
Ron , your thoughts were exactly as mine. John, I appreciate you bringing Peterson's introduction into light. There are a lot of possibilities in fleshing out those four points! Thanks again. peace, phill

I like using The Message in my illustrations because it conveys so well - in easily understandable english (by many age groups) - the essence of what a particular scripture is saying.
In the context of being a performer, it is imperative that we present the point we are trying to make as clearly as possible. So, The Message gives a great verbal anchor while an illusion provides a visual anchor. These work well together to improve communication and retention. |
