I like tricks (usually with cards) that have a mentalism slant.
Example I will deal cards until you tell me to stop, then you predicted the card they stopped at. Cut the deck anywhere you want, you cut at the joker. Pick a card any card, wow you picked the only blue backed card. These are the type of tricks that I like, where mentalism seems to be the explanation of the effect. Does anyone have a recomended book with a listing of effects like this? |

The Brainwave and Thought Sender decks are good dealing with mentalism. If you are thinking about getting serious with mentalism, try ESP cards.

Hi,
If you want to be mentalist its wrong to use cards,coins..etc. You must do real mental things as a mentalist. If you don't you will be a mental magician. If you want to be a mental magician, ok, you can look for Max Maven tapes, and may be Richard Osterlind... magicially yours, Nedim Guzel |

Mentalism is just an interest for me. I love watching and reading about mentalism. But I believe there are two categories. Mental magic and mentalism. And I believe if you want to be a mentalist you must live like a mentalist not like a magician.

Dear Mr. Osterlind,
I love your Dvds and your magic. But when you wrote I couldn't understand what you mean clearly. Did you look to the subject as I do or not? Do you agree my suggestion about mentalism? magicially yours, Nedim Guzel |

Nedim,
All the men I mentioned used cards in their work. Using cards in mentalism does not make one a "mental magician" as opposed to a "mentalist." It is a legitimate part of the art. Richard |

Mr. Osterlind,
I understand what you mean. But I think a mentalist must use cards less than a magician. magicially yours, Nedim Guzel |

Nedim,
I agree with you 100%. They must be used very sparingly. I, for instance, only do one or two effects of that type all evening. Since many magicians think of cards as a magicians prop, they worry a bit too much about them. For the average lay person, a deck of playing cards is for card games and gambling. And, of course, you want to avoid flourishes and fancy sleights, but rather handle them the same way most people do. Yours, Richard |

Mr. Osterlind,
I agree with you. When people saw a mentalist who can do lots of flourishes with cards, they can't believe him. Also I like your style and magic. In my old writing I just try to say a lots of mentalists forget to do mentalism in their acts. They think like they are presenting any kind of magic trick. I think this is a wrong way to do mental magic. magicially yours, Nedim Guzel |

The cards issue has been debated in Corinda's 13 Steps,Mind ,Myth and Magic, but most well-known mentalists have always been in favour of them.I have seen some very convincing mental effects using cards(eg. does anything look more legitimate than Radar Deck?).
I believe cards definately have their place in mentalism. AJ |

I use playing cards in most of my work (BCS regularly). They are common, everyday objects to people and, contrary to the belief of many, playing cards do not indicate ‘magic tricks’ to the general public. In fact, currently you can turn on the television any day of the week and find people playing poker on several channels.
Cards are merely a tool, a limited tool of 52 items. I'm dealing with an infinite number of choices here ... fifty-two cards. If in my "J ack Galloway Experiment" for instance, I had the participant visually choose any object they could set their eyes on, I could not have done this or even gotten close. The jazz musician, for instance, also has a finite number of notes in his arsenal. The J ack Galloway Experiment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98kGzHNzk1w
