Too early to discuss the details of that. Email me.
Meanwhile keep the ideas coming for the INSTANT MAGIC HOLIDAY TURKEY productions coming, and I'll keep you informed of the Microwave production, and Mike Bent is giving his Temple screen idea some thought as well as others..... Exciting place to meet up with all of you. Let's hear it for the Café! Ax

I saw the original Turkey made for the magician that Steve mentioned in his first post. The turkey is INCREDIBLE and his production of it is brilliant. I saw him at the PCAM this year.
Posted: Sep 27, 2007 5:22pm Forgot to ad that the microwave production is incredible. I saw it live and it is very clever and a unique principle. Without giving it away he produced other food items from the microwave, was able to show it empty after each production and then just when you thought it was over he produced the cooked turkey. Foole the heck out of me and a lot of magicians around me!! If he did market this microwave then I'd be in line to buy it!! |

My turkey arrived today ! This thing is WAY cool. I am taking the suggestion from Potty and building a thin cookbook to use for the production. This puppy will be the highlight of my Thanksgiving/Christmas shows. My wife and son think the bird looks very real, and my dog actually tried to jump up and steal it.
Steve, you are a genius ! This is my first Axtell purchase, and I suspect you may have created a monkey on my back. Does anyone know if there is a source for foam vegetables that I could add to this effect ? I would love to have the turkey surrounded by some trimmings as the cookbook pops open. I have some carrots I bought from Dan Garrett, but would like to find some other types of veggies as well. Mark Pettey Naples, FL

Trumpetman - thanks for the kind words. You can just use regular fake trimming like garland, tomatoes, etc. Use things that can fit into a 2" space. Cherry tomatoes etc. They don't have to be foam unless you are compressing smaller than their size. It might look more real too! Send photos of you using it for our website.
Ax Posted: Nov 6, 2007 7:42pm I should clarify that the Turkey compresses down to 2" vertically to flatten it out.... It will not squeeze down into a 2" ball size so you can palm it. You could do this if it was only latex, but then it wouldn't pop open as fast as it does with the foam cross section. Ax

Nice Mark! It's great to see how different people can use the same Instant Turkey prop. It seems perfect to come from a cookbook. Thanks for video taping that to share with us. What's the patter / routine concept?
Here is also Matt Johnson's Microwave Production (which the turkey was originally built for) on our site. He might be interested in making some of these. http://www.axtell.com/instantturkey.html Ax

My routine for the turkey prop involves making Thanksgiving dinner using magic. I get sidetracked along the way with a rubber chicken and a Goshman hotdog, but eventually realize a cookbook and recipe would help. I did this at two fall festivals and several preschools over the last week, and it rocked every time. The prop is extremely reliable, and pops right up into shape so fast laypeople can't catch it.
I am begining to wonder is you shouldn't make the same bird in a slightly different shade, a bit closer to the color of a roasted chicken. Perhaps a bit more yellowish/brown as opposed to the turkey's orangish/brown tint ? It could pass for a big chicken, I think. Would it be hard to change the color of the prop in the production process ?

The turkey fits in the abbot duck pan,
but then wont come out....shame. The abbot pan doesn't have a spring system. |

Here's how to cook your turkey in a regular dove pan:
First, remove the foam from inside your turkey. Now take the gimmick from your pan, and place the turkey in legs first (I found easiest). Fold the remaining turkey into the gimmick, and tuck the wing end in on the opposite side to the legs. The turkey will be produced vertically, as you will see. By now the turkey should be sitting comfortably in the gimmick, but the top will be quite proud. Place the lid over the gimmick, to ensure it goes in evenly, then lift the whole shebang, and carefully ease the gimmick into place, ensuring that all the clips stay perfectly vertical, and no latex gets trapped between lid and gimmick. It's a bit tricky, but if you're used to putting large loads into your dove pan, you'll find it straighforward enough. You will need to know which side the wings are tucked down, as this is effectively the back (or bottom) of the turkey, when you produce it, the BOTTOM should be facing you, the TOP facing the audience. Now for the production: at the right time, slam the lid on the pan, and hold it firmly in place. Lift the whole pan, and slowly allow the top to work its way upwards. I usually shake the pan at this stage as if something weird is going on inside. Allow the back of the pan (the wing side) to go up higher than the front, which you hold down slightly. Ease the wing end of the turkey free, using both thumbs, and then hook your right thumb into the end of the turkey as your fingers grasp the lid. By now, the lid should be pretty much vertical, as the turkey is starting to appear. You simply lift the lid up, and allow the turkey to some into full view, your thumb pulling it up just beneath the lid. I then rest the turkey against my chest, which stops it looking too fake, and allows it to easily keep its shape. It sounds tricky, but it looks great! Potty |

Hi Guys,
I found this thread and thought I would say hello. I am the magician that Ax custom created the turkey for. I use it as part of my "Fast Food" competition act. I designed a microwave production that is like a triple production bunny box with a blammo finish to produce the turkey. Steve has a picture of the microwave I use on his website although the Eureka base that the microwave is sat on is not the base I use in my act. In my act the microwave is attached to a pole that is built into a kitchen table that is part of my act. I am thinking of marketing the microwave however the one I release will be more of a traditional microwave shape and will probably only be a single or double production. You could also use the microwave to produce a sponge birthday cake in a baking a cake routine or to produce a bunny. I understand the idea of a bunny from a microwave may seem a little gross to some but imagine pulling out a hair (hare) from your head and placing it in the microwave only to produce a hare! :o) This production item is only limited to your imagination and would probably also come with a Eureka table base so it is free standing and a CD with all the microwave sounds. Everything from the beeping of the buttons to the cooking sound and finishing with the ding at the end. Let me take this time to also mention that Steve and his team did a fantastic job and if you are looking for a custom made product they cannot be beat in both service and creativity. I chose to have Ax release the turkey to the magic community after it was made for me as I really felt this was something that other magicians should have.....it's awsome! If anyone has any questions regarding the microwave, the turkey or anything else I would be more than happy to help. Thanks again Ax you guys are #1 in my book. Matt Johnson |

How perfect Matt would post about the TURKEY on THANKSGIVING DAY! This works for Christmas as well or anytime year round. I can't wait to see your new microwave and also to see a video of it.
Potty, thanks for your post about the Dove Pan. I like that you are experimenting and have found a way. I haven't tried this yet, but I wonder....couldn't you keep the foam in the turkey and just set him (or her?) upright in a bigger DUCK pan? Certainly, for most magicians making this work well in a duck pan they might already have is great, and if not, we do carry the Morrissey duck pan. I'll try it next week and give a report. Ax

I'd like to know how the Duck pan production looks....when the turkey comes out of a Dove Pan, it's hilarious, as it's so much BIGGER than the pan!
Harris, that's a really funny idea; a REAL raw turkey! Could put a stick up it's **** and hey presto! An instant Christmas puppet! As you suggest, it might get a bit smelly as Christmas approaches, making several appearances a day. Probably not ideal for the very young kiddies....... :) |

The Duck Pan works Great! You can leave the foam inside the turkey the way it is built. A piece of duct tape will hold the base of the turkey down and keep him from tipping foward. Keep the flat back away from the audience. You can see photos of the Duck Pan here.....

Ax, you're right, the Duck Pan looks awesome! I love the way the turkey is so much bigger than the pan! Just ordered one from you, thanks for the pic!

Steve,
Here is an idea for a duck pan production turkey. After it is produced (as in the photo on your site) put on a pair of glasses, ears and mouth like a "Mr. Potato Head". Since it is hollow, and you are not showing the back side, you could make the mouth move by making a slit for the mouth (held together with some magnets. You could use magnets to make the eyes move too. For the routine, one could use a prop knife to "carve" the Turkey, and the first cut would be the mouth, allowing it to talk. One could then use various garnishments to make the ears, nose and eyes... If I could modify it personally (concerned about the mouth) please PM me. |

Wanna make it talk? You could produce it in a laying down position with it's feet facing the audience (not up in a duck pan but something bigger like the book or oven)... and after the applause, have it start talking and look surprised...double take from the bird to your audience.....then lift the turkey upright and start talking to the cooked turkey like this!

Steve, I love your products, but I just don't like the head on the chicken/turkey. It is not how you made it (top-notch, as usual), any "semi- realistic" head just doesn't do it for me on this prop. Why I can have it be a "head" but not have one . . . I don't know. Probably for the same reason we take the head off the turkey before cooking and eating it. Can my suggestion be done by modifying it, or is it whole different "turkey"? *G*?

Haha.... well Fred a riot of a puppet and very popular as poultry goes, but it's very edgy and probably better for teens or adults, not kids. I'll PM you on the other idea.
