Chad, you're right about Copperfield doing that trick with the camera. It's a Paul Daniels' idea I think. Nice illusion! He called it "camera trick-or a trick with a camera!"...You can see it on youtube, write Copperfield camera trick and you'll see it.

Has anyone tried it with a mylar curtain?

On the cover of Magic Mag. one month, was a pitcure of Mike Caveney doing this effect. I think the prop belonged to Thurston. The box was small and a mylar curtain was used. I think the gimmick is in a fixed location for this and mylar was affixed to the bottom of it to make the curtain seem continuous behind it. The squares that Copperfield used, allows for the gimmick to be retracted in and out of the curtain.

Err...so, I bought the Walter Jeans book, and it arrived this morning. Obviously, I had a little bit of a misconception
Anyhow, thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I also want to apologize for not searching first - usually I do, but that day I had a little bit of a brain lapse - had I made a simple search I would have found many of the same people making the same recommendations. Thanks again! |

The real problem with that version is in pulling them up and out of the box, which in Jim's case was accomplished by a variety of ariel lifts- trapeze, climbing ropes, etc. If the main production is a large troupe of adults, you might be better off with a larger cabinet such as the one you link to in your post, with a simple walkway out to the cabinet rather than a crawl tunnel.

The book you want is "Walter Jeans Illusioneer" by Peter Warlock. Here is one source; there are others.

Buy the book at mcmagicwords.com Mike Cavenay's web site, he was the publisher
It will tell you how to do the effect, but not how to actually build it. I do not know of any plans out there for this effect. A copy of the patent may help you (which is in several books). I believe the revolving design is Jim Steinmeyer's (correct me if wrong, also it is not open for general building) How many people can you produce? Oh, a couple of thousand, or the entire cast of your show, which ever is larger. See if the one for sale is still on Magicauction and buy that one that would be the best and easiest way to get one. I remember Joseph Gabriel doing a nice routine with his MDM that I liked a lot. Franz Harary did one, with a very long missile going into him. I think Siegfried & Roy did one, also, with tigers coming out at the end. If memory serves me, S&R used a "spider web" instead of the typical mylar or squares.

The Floating Ball: "It floats...and floats... and floats. Yawn. What else can it do?"
The Inexhaustible Hat: "Oh look, another hankie. 1,000 so far. Yawn. This is like an expensive box of Kleenex" The Million Dollar Mystery: "Ten people so far. Yawn. Here comes another one. What else can it do?" Sure you CAN produce a hundred people from the Million Dollar Mystery. The question is, SHOULD you? Read the "Illusioneer" book and see what OTHER things early magicians with a good sense of showmanship did with it.
