Hello,
Well I am starting to build an illusion show and I have a sub trunk and a costume trunk. I plan to get more after a few shows but now its time for an assistant. I am having trouble with a costume trunk... I received mine from a friend and there were no instructions. the dec------ base plus the little room in the trunk seems quite small for a women. also what is the best position to fit inside. I know all costume trunks aren’t the same but it seems that only a child would fit in that compartment. Don’t get me wrong the illusion itself is huge. Its over 3 feet tall with base and 4-5 ft long. Also once a costume is chosen, is it customary to put the shelves back and then close the trunk and then have the girl pop out. Or is it better to leave the two shelves out and throw the costume in the trunk, close it and then have the girl pop out? Im 5 foot 6, I'm short. givin I am also 200 pounds but I don’t fit. Lol Also what should I look for in an assistant, besides being hot? lol after seeking the compartment for the costume trunk I think I will have to pay my assistant good so I wont feel bad... it would suck to be in there for a few minutes. thanks |

You need to find out the size of assistant the trunk was built for. I've seen several routines. I know a couple are out there on video. Mark Wilson has the costume trunk done, I believe on one of the Magic Land of Alakazam videos he sells, call Nani (website http://www.markwilsonmagic.com ) and she can direct you to which video. As I recall on Uncle Harry's video, the one called Remembering Blackstone, there is a costume trunk, routine. Either of those videos or any number of other performance videos of the trick will give you an idea of how the routine works and what to do with drawers and costume. I doubt with your number of posts anybody will tell you outright how to do the routine or how the girl fits in the box. But there are books out there that cover this illusion and you can find them fairly easy by doing a web search.
That is one of the problems of buying used illusions, they are generally built for a particular sized assistant, and you have to find an assistant the same size to use it.

This illusion is also covered in Paul Osborne's "Book 1", with building plans and performance information, likewise it is available from him as a separate plan, as is with Abbott's. Not that you're looking to build one, but there might be some useful information in there for you.
You've already been given good information, but if you'd like to PM me, I could possibly direct you further as I have extensive experience with this illusion. I've used an Abbott's, a Gaughan and one built by a cabinet-maker and know some ins and outs (pun intended!) of working with smaller areas. Aaron |
