Hi All,
I have been thinking of modifying Bill Abbott's "Chico" routine to use my Axtell puppet "Vern the Bird". I don't actually have any ventriloquism skills, so I thought this routine would be perfect. Has anybody else thought of doing this? I would love to hear about any ideas or suggestions. -=Chris |

Andy Clockwise a well known childrens entertainer here in the UK, does a great routine on his DVD, with a bird puppet and a blooming bouquet.
After introducing the puppet and some by play, the bird decides to peck off the flowers one by one, these are then thrown out to members of the audience to look after, He then puts the bird away, and collects all the petals in a drawer box, stating that they will disapear from the box, and appear back on the bouquet, and indeed the petals do disapear, but....ah....they did not arrive back on the bouquet, you then slide the lever and go into a "They see, you don't" routine with the bouquet. It is a very funny routine to watch, and requires no vent skills at all,,, I have a "Wide Mouth" dragon puppet in my show called "Burnie" and this routine goes down a storm with the kids.

I have a novel suggestion. Why not create your own routine, instead of using someone elses?

Bill Abbott's routine has some great touches, but my rabbit-in-hat puppet has been doing "mind reading" with a deck of alphabet cards for years, with my own touches including a small crystal ball and glasses he insists he has to wear to see into the ball better, etc., etc.
I'm sure many others have used a similar routine over the years. Just take the premise and create your own personal routine. Andy

Thanks for the advice Chubby, that routine sounds perfect. I think it would be easier for the younger kids to follow than the card trick from the Chico routine.

See Baha, all you need is to write and rewrite your own "personal routine' about 20 times then with about 5 years of constant performance you'll have a "chico" worthy bit. See you in 2012.

Lol! MoonRazor, that was priceless. While I'm at it I think I might reinvent the wheel too!

This is why British Entertainers will always be on top, the majority of us actually have spent time in the theater...and know how to write comedy. We don't come here to have something handed to us with the arrogant expectation and attitude you seem to have.... In other words, the best help I think you can get, is to do the work and create your own routine...

Actually, by the time you convert the Chico routine to a mouth puppet routine you will have written out a whole new routine, anyhow. All the moves are for a hand puppet and all the gags are for a monkey.
I'm glad Mr Riddle has pointed out the fine attributes of the British but he forgot to mention their excellent manners, diplomacy and modesty. George |

Tom Riddle is correct when he says "I do not think "helping magicians" is handing over routines that take years of work to amateurs".
There was a time when you could (actually had to) take the bones of an effect from a book or magazine and make it your own. With the advent of tape and DVD it is much more difficult to divorce yourself from the hard-earned successful presentation on the video. Video is a mixed blessing: A wonderful teaching tool but the danger of becoming a clone of the performer is very real. Andy
