I am looking for a gimmick that I think was made at one time. It is an expanded shell coin, but half of the edge/rim has been cut away. So that you can slide a coin into and out of it. That way you don't have to lift up the shell. are these still made? or were they manufactured as part of a trick?
Chad or am I just crazy and this never existed until now? In which case I hold the manufacturing rights to it! |

I seem to remember seeing that shell modification in Steve Dusheck's "Dusheck's Coin Magic" book.
I'll try to find the exact reference and get back with you.

The gaff you are referring to was called a
"Slippery Sam" gimmick, is old as the hills, and can be made by anyone even remotely handy with tools. Take a standard shell and saw (jeweler's saw) away half of the rim; jeweler's files are used to finish up the edge. Or send me a shell coin and I'll do it for you. Regards, Thomas Wayne (PS. they were also made in "poker chip" style sets) One more thing... I checked the Dusheck book today and - as I thought I remembered - there is no such gaff among the many gems therein. Regards, Thomas Wayne

Hi Chad!
This would be extremely easy with a Dremel tool as well! I love doing stuff like this! I'd be glad to do it for you, being ever so careful! Let me know if interested! Steve

Thomas is absolutely correct. I was in error.
It was in Steve Dusheck's LECTURE NOTES and not in his book. It's found on page 12, as "Copper/Silver Transposition" but in this instance it's an English Penny shell that has been filed off. He also performs with this gimmick on his video "Steve Dusheck Live." It looks sweet and is a very clean coin change. Thomas, thanks for helping me out (and keeping me honest)!

I also was looking for this shell and found it at none other than Steve Dusheck himself.

Can anyone tell me how to locate Steve Dusheck? I want to know if he or someone he is working with is marketing his "Slippery Sam" routine.
Thanks, Bob |

ummm.... Jeff posted his email 2 posts up.
Steve posts somewhat often at the Genii forum, which means he is online, which means it's a good bet he gets his email. Dan |
