How does a silent magician(me) gather a crowd(a good one) without using music?

Yep...
I likes to use a BURLAP BAG. That usually muffles the noise of them screaming for help. Plastic bags are not good...
I am truly blessed to have a job where people are laughing all the time and everyone believes in magic....Come to think of it, I'm blessed to even have a job.

I used to build my crowd with this routine when I was traveling in europe cuz it was silent which made it language universal. I still do it now and then. understand there was nobody there when I first put the cigerette in my mouth and when I was done with the routine my crowd was there and ready for me to begin a show. so while your watching the silent part the crowd is building. by the time I ask em to clap I had my crowd. I prefer I silent build, but some times its difficult. while I'm performing I'm putting off the vibe that "i'm having problems and I don't want any body looking at me" "a mind your own business" attitude and I think I'm a professional and a big shot but obviously I'm pathetic. I'm trying to create a situation where the spectator thinks they are very bright for discovering a glorious loser. and they hang around very proud of themselves for it. |

Thanks guys.
Jimmy: Thank you for the advise, good to know that it is possible. I have probably watched that video like 20 times and I still think that it is one of the most unique and entertaining shows I've seen... I'm thinking about starting off with some sort of manipulation routine then once I have an edge doing card to mouth but when I take the card out of my mouth it's attached to a mouth coil(lots of crowd gathering/comedy opportunities)... but it's still in the planning stages cause as of right now I have no way of getting to Nashville and back... |

I started with Dice Stacking. Without saying a word I set up my table, laid out the dice and cup and nervously circled the table. (the nervousness part was real) People started to stop just to see what I was up to.
I recently saw a short juggling video that sounds very like Jimmy's approach where the guy was laying out his clubs and they kept rolling away. It progressed into something I could only call "ground juggling" as he rolled them in patterns and circles, laying clubs over each other as they "danced" around on the pavement. That's all the video showed but I'm sure if he started out like this it wouldn't take long before people were gathering to see what would happen next.
No trees were killed in the making of this message, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

I tried Bill Abbott's The Thing last weekend. It worked much like in the video, but like in the video they were 30 feet away! People will stop, but they seem to be comfortable right where they are. Like in Jimmy's video above, the next step is to get them in closer. He is quite persistent and repeats his command to "come in closer" at least a half dozen times.

I used to do some thing like that for my juggling show, then I would get to putting out the rope I use as a "stage" and would get people to hold, stand on or otherwise keep the rope in place. this would put people in the way of those who stopped to far away and I then invite them to move closer or they will miss something.
It works, but it takes time.

How about a sign that says "Magic Show, 10 minutes". Then another, "Magic Show, 5 minutes", etc. Start with the sign, then as you count down, set up your stuff, table, etc., bring out the props for the first effect. Get the gathering crowd to count down the time, and when it hits zero, do an exagerated entrance and start the show.

Great video of Jimmy!!-excellent
Last week I was in a busy Main St & had a sign - with Its Magic!! was all it took for people to stop & watch as I was sorting cards etc & as soon as 1 person was watching I did some manipulation, a bill switch etc then a few more stopped & before long crowds had built-all done silently then when a few were around-I was talking ,gags etc..... |

I use a sign also while I'm silent performing it simply says "magic show"
I wrote on this subject at the other Café and it's got clips of other street magicians working in europe. and it explains what they're doing |

Or you can go to my blog
http://jimmytalksalot.blogspot.com/ but I would urge people who are serious about becoming pro to go to the other Café it's the best source of information anywhere or any time. and theres a lot less amatuers with speculations and theories who will mislead the beginner. don't get me wrong I love the magic Café for huge source of magic it's like disneyland for me, but if you wanna go pro or just wanna know the real skivy check out the other Café. |
