Okay, I need some advice. I recently stripped my tuxedo, took out all the pockets and am starting to put it all together again...this time it will hopefully turn out a little better since I'm having a seamstress do it instead of me with my remedial sewing techniques. Since I;m confident she could do it and make it look right, I was considering having my sleeves shortened because I think mine might be a little long.
How long do you guys like to keep your sleeves? What are the pros and cons of long and short? With my hands at my side, my sleeves rest at about half-way down the palm. Sometimes they get in the way, and some times it seems like they need to be there. Any advice would be great. Thanks! Allen

Allen,
I'm no clothes horse, but Tony Slydini was a real tailor in real life. Due to his method of measuring for a magician, my cuffs are shorter than that. The cuff stops at the base of the thumb where it meets the wrist. When you steal enough fabric at the elbow to hide something, the cuff shows the cuff link. (I'm right handed. So the right one is about a quarter to half inch longer for coin sleeving. That is my favorite coin vanish from a table top.) Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Thanks Bob!
I was hoping that you would be one of the first to reply. I was thinking about having it cut down to about that length. Do you think it might have any negative impact on dove steals from the sleeve? Allen

Allen,
It may put some pressure on you to make it the opener. Otherwise, shorter is better. The dead giveaway that I have a sleeved dove is no wrist watch. And I use it as an opener if I'm doing that. But Sleeves today are almost too tight for a sleeved dove. So I take other alternatives. Knock my socks off! I look forward to seeing how it works for you. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Bob, I usually do end up having to use the sleeve production as an opener, but would someday like to figure out a good way to delay it. When you say that sleeves today are usually too tight for a sleeved dove, it came to mind that Gen Grant once mentioned something to me in the way of adding a piece of fabric to the bottom of the sleeve to make productions more feasible. Have you ever done anything like this? How much space should I have in there? Thanks yet again!

Allen, the extra piece of material in the sleeve is standard if you intend to do a sleeve load. It's best added by a seamstress and since you have one, you're all set. You get a piece of matching material, (she should be able to do this for you) in a triangular shape about 6 to 7 inches long and tapered from 3 inches to the tip. She'll cut the sleeve seam and sew in the extra piece of material. This gives you the right amount of space to hold the dove. It's very easy to do a sleeve production part way into you routine instead of at the beginning. You just need to find a way to close the sleeve util you are ready.

Great advice as always! My sleeves on my tux are like Bob says. If they are too long, it just doesn't look quite "right". Having them taliored to "fit" gives a different perception to your appearance, and doesn't look "sloppy". I don't mean "sloppy" in a bad way, but I mean more in a "polished" way. Its like seeing kids wearing their pants halfway down their - blank-. For some reason, you want to say "wear a belt and pull your pants up. *smile*. Polishing up your look where everything "seems" to fit is much better. A couple of shoulder pads can fix that issue though if you need that extra room!
My 2 cents if it helps...*smile* |

Thomas,
You sound like a parent! "Wear a belt and pull your pants up." Fortunately my son (at 26) is a baseball player and doesn't have that problem. However, having been a parent, I associate sagging pants with loaded diapers. So I would have to say, "Come back when you are toilet trained". Adding the "tear drop" is something many people do. I tried Dave's strategy of "added space" many years ago when we could wear a colored or textured tux and still be dressed as an adult. (They are probably still OK on stage for a costume but please change before leaving stage.) This one was made from a velvet looking Lycra that gave what was needed. (Yep! Johnny Cash Houdini) It did not work for me. I like the dove on my thumb side. You can't keep it there with too much give. (I also never want another suit with Lycra that is to look like a tailored suit or tux. They don't hold their shape.) That fabric does make great portable curtains. But the poor soul that has to make them will never talk to you again. They have trouble pinning it straight. Suggestion: If you are doing it as an opener, have you tried a dove pocket in the vest but no dove harness at all? When I did that at the Gala Show in Washington DC (Magi-Whirl 2007) they assumed I used invisible harnesses. (I never do.) Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Allen,
Tony Clark's video "Behind the Seams" goes over a tux. Just buy it. |

Just a tip if you decided to add the extra fabric as I suggested. Make sure you do both sides, even if you only sleeve load one side. It doesn't seem like much materail but it is noticeable if one sleeve is 3" larger in circumsference than the other.

Mike, you don't understand. Bob's age started over when Noah landed the ark. He's been in his thirties quite a few times already.

Thanks for all the great advice everyone! I just got behind the seams the other day so I could get Clarks take on everything. So far, it looks really helpful! I'm going to have the seamstress add the fabric to the sleeves, and possibly a guesset to under the arms.

Noah was a good kid. I let him use my doves.
Wow! Was that nearly thirty years ago? Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |
