I think it's wise to join both but if it's a matter of money for dues and you do plan on being a member of your local chapter then you may want to check out some chapter meetings before coming to a decision. I wish I had done this in my case.

I am a member of both, plus a local, independent magic club, and a not-so-local IBM Ring. All have helped me in my art. If you can join both national bodies, that is the way to go. If there is a local club (ring, assembly or independent) consider at least visiting to see if you "click" with the members.

You can join as many magic organizations as you can afford the dues and meet their requirements. Many of us belong to both IBM and SAM, plus others. I'm a member of IBM, SAM, Academy of Magical Arts, TAOM, Invisible Lodge, and Dallas Magic Clubs. If it meets your interests, you can afford the dues, and you meet their requirements, go for it.

Or you could join neither. I don't belong to any national orgainisation and get along perfectly well. I am a member of our local club which suits my magic needs perfectly so I've never seen a reason to affiliate with a inter\national orgainisation.
It just depends on what you want out of your magical life.

Well put Payne, I guess that is more along the lines of what I was trying to convey. Bottom line is no one's opinion on this should really influence your decision tcrufus, all of our experiences are going to be different. What matters is.... does it work for you?

I Respect your opinion Payne, but if you belong to 1 or 100 organizations does not mean that we are good you are as a magician, you got a point.Anyway I prefer to belong to them.
Thanks, Hasel!

Some people can really gain a lot from joining an org, I personally just found myself just going to see what books one of the dealers that hung around in the beginning of meetings had. I can say I did meet some really cool members that I still keep in touch with but that the lectures and such weren't my cup of tea. Now I just stick to one off lectures and conventions. But hey that's just my experience, everyone is different.

Joining and remaining in magic clubs tends to fulfill a social need. I joined the IBM many years ago to meet other magicians and learn more about magic. I stayed in the IBM as for many years I enjoyed the magazine and found meetings that I could attend when I traveled for work. I belonged to SAM for a few years. I had to drop it when my income shifted many years ago. I never re-joined.
Joining clubs is strictly a personal decision. IBM, SAM, the Magic Circle, etc. all have their benefits and concerns. One that works for one may not work for another.

Lets see I'm a member of:
IBM SAM Local Chapters of both MAES Wednesday Night Magic {local here in Mechanicsburg} & soon KIDabra Wow I have to do shows just to be able to keep up with my Dues... but its worth it. I have made many a friend for life through Magic and I wouldn't trade it & them for the world. Ok maybe 2 worlds but that's what it would take.

It all depends on your personal needs and desires. It also depends on the quality of your local club.
We have several local clubs that meet on a monthly basis. There are two SAM assemblies, one IBM ring, and a number of non-affiliated groups. I belong to SAM Assembly 19, IBM Ring 39 and the Magic Circle of London. Each of these clubs gives me something that the others do not.

Greetings,
Daddy Doodle says "Many of the local clubs (both IBM and SAM in my area) require you to be a member of the national organization before you can be a member of the local club" . . . The S.A.M., as part of its rules state that members of an assembly must be members of the S.A.M. national; we further stipulate that the officers of the assembly must by design be members of national as well. Having been involved in a dispute in my general area here in Florida of a ring/assembly group, I can tell you that the I.B.M. requires the same of members of a ring and that therefore, by default, all officers and board members must belong to both groups nationally, especially because they will be making rules over members of whichever group. The magic association in question requires you belong to either IBM or SAM but to be an officer or on the board you must belong to both which conforms to the rules of the national. Payne says his local ring does not require national membership for those who were members before they became an IBM ring, I can't speak for the IBM but if it was an assembly I know the SAM would stipulate that he must be a member of the national. I believe that Maria is 100% correct on this. I know she is accurate in regards to the SAM policy. However, I also think she is right when it comes to the IBM. I belive the IBM also requires any of its local ring members to also be a national member before they can beocme a local ring member. At least this as as far as I recall.

In Michigan we have at least two locations where SAM and IBM are combined. We have both meetings the same time.
