I thought I would share a little information on a favourite subject that might help some of you creating new bizarre effects. That subject is, of course, werewolves! Following is a list of all the ways I can remember from my research that folklore mentions a werewolf can be created. If you know of any I don't mention, please add it to the thread. Here they are:
- Be bitten by a werewolf. - Be bitten by a wolf. - Drink water from a spring or pool where wolves have drank. - Drink from a certain mystic spring in the Harz Mountains in Germany. - Drink water from the footprint of a wolf. - Consume the heart of a wolf or werewolf. - Sleep outside on a Friday night and have the light of a full moon shine on your face. - Be born on Christmas day. Some folklore claims you are cursed for this since it is a sacred birthday. - Be descended from a werewolf. The effect is sometimes reputed to skip generations. - Wear the skin of a wolf (or werewolf). - Wear a small white flower that grows in the marshes of the Baltic region of Europe. That's about all I can remember right now. Backstory for a small vial of water is probably the most direct application of some of these that I can think of. Anyone know any more, or have any suggestions on how to use them? -bigwolf {*}

With a little imagination, Egyptian god Anubis maybe considered a first werewolf. In Haitian voodoo, the lougarou (werewolf) is not specially a wolf but an evil being, for sure. Don't forget the Gevaudan beast and a little less known French malebete.
A dead werewolf becomes a vampire. This is another idea, think about people like Jo-jo the dog-faced boy, who was working with Barnum. Who was he REALLY ? A freak or a werewolf. Food for thought... Remember the movie with Lon Chaney jr, and the sign of the five pointed star appearing in the palm of the next victim (variation on ashes in the palm ?). |

Check out this site for info on Werewolves http://www.sacred-texts.com/goth/bow/index.htm also my effect;
The Changling Some people, it is said, have a certain dementia to their souls. A direct connection to the ruthless animal. These individuals may appear normal enough to us, but upon closer inspection expose something rotting with in -- a deep dark secret. They say the Devil can smell a rottenness upon a man's soul and tempt him with a type of evil magick that can at once turn him into a savage beast. Sometimes this temptation comes in the form of the Devil's ointment. Where all a man must do is bathe in a pool where a pack of wolves have just drank. These men are known as shape shifters. They were known to the wise men and shamans of days past as well as the prophets of today. Folk tales and rumors tell of the vexing of the spirit of the wolf however once the line to darkness is crossed, returning is a journey never traveled by any man. To turn a man back from the beast he has embraced is said to be an impossibility. They, like the very hounds of hell, are subject to the devil. The only way to save a wolf, eternal soul is ***ed to the master of all darkness, is to have him stand trial before a holy tribunal and to be destroyed as one is beheaded, limbs severed and the torso burned at the stake. A high price to pay for redemption. Or is it? Here I hold the tooth of such a beast. From the soul of a ***ed wolf. This tooth was taken through extreme means that shall not be discussed at this time. The tooth makes the change in darkness. The same darkness that envelopes the soul of the ***ed. (Ask for a volunteer) You sir / madam look as though you are of strong character. In your hand I place this tooth from the wolf. It must remain in complete darkness to make the metamorphosis possible so please resist the human frailty of curiosity to behold the actual working of the change. (Take the tooth and place it in their hand turning the hand over as you do this much as one would do in a sponge ball routine.) Here I have a vial. In which is stored an herb called Wolf's Bane. I shall sprinkle some on the back of your hand. (Mumble some nonsense words) please open you hand, there by releasing this tortured soul from the darkness the engulfs it, and show the tooth. Working: Needed are a canine tooth and a human molar (mine was a wisdom tooth I keep) as well as a small bottle of some type. The more odd looking the better. A simple shuttle pass is the only extra needed. As you tell the story and come to the part where you place the tooth in the hand to the shuttle pass and pick up the bottle with the hand holding the Wolf tooth. Place the human tooth in their hand, concealing it as you close their hand and turn it over. The rest is acting.... I place the small bottle and the wolf tooth in my pocket as I put them away. WR

For those of you that missed it, there's a kind of 'she-wolf' routine here, called 'Losing your voice'.

Bigwolf, inspired by this cool thread I've come up with 'A walk in the woods'. I've posted it here:

I should have known I would forget one:
- certain cursed moonstones were reputed to cause lycanthropy in the possessor. Sometimes made into jewellery or a pendant, they usually could not be passed on voluntarily. A great backstory if you have a piece of opalescent orthoclase... The Curator has a great idea with the ashes in the palm approach, and a couple of other great routines above by WR (The Changeling would be great around a campfire) and Caleb. Definitely check out Caleb's "Walk in the Woods" thread, a totally cool and creepy idea. -bigwolf {*}

Anyone who loves werewolf routines needs to read David Parr's "Brain food." It contains a great routine, that takes the star on the palm idea one step farther. It also has a very surprising ending.
I also thought I would share a bit that I did for a haunted house a few years ago. I would tell a brief story about being bitten by a wolf and loosing time. I would show the bite mark on my shoulder. I would explain that I was feeling funny and I would step into a cage and chain myself to a chair. I would then visibly change into a werewolf (peppers ghost/girl to gorilla illusion) which would escape and case the guests. Always got a great reaction from it. Someday, I would like to incorporate that effect into much longer, ceremonial type routine. Ideas? Dave |
