Boy, I wish I'd sold off some of those OOP L&L books before they started re-releasing them as downloads. Think I paid over $100 for Impossibilia alone. If this is the wave of the future, it's probably something to keep in mind for those of us who are still sitting on rare books.

I agree with the crack analogy! I have waaaay more books than anyone ever would need but I constantly buy more. I have a running list of "important" books that I want. when I find one, I usually end up buying 3 other, non-listed books too; and then I add 2 more to my list! I just love to see other people's solutions to the problems/effects out there. plus, I love reading a book and seeing references to other books that I have and can immediately investigate. I will probably never sell my books but its comforting to think that I could sell most of my books for at least what I paid.

Max, ironically I just purchased the pdf of impossibilia a few days ago. I'm glad they released them. I have most of the books that they released and, while I imagine this keeps premium re-sale prices down, I'm sure I could always sell them for at least what I paid. I would generally prefer the physical book and I suspect many others feel this way. I will eventually buy impossibilia if I can find it for a price close to original retail but in the mean time, I can access the material. books may end up not being great investments, but I think they will at least be great holders of value.

Unfortunately a lot of stuff is showing up on torrent sites for free. I was looking for a price of a well know magazine that has been out of print and it was listed on several torrent sites. I wrote a music index book that took me three years to complete and that showed up on a torrent site. #^@#(*& !!
Et tu, Spartacus?

Here's a solution that someone mentioned for torrent sites. It is not my idea, nor would I know exactly how to implement it, but it sounded clever.
If you find a torrent site with your material, go to the site and upload 20 CORRUPTED file copies of your work. Then, the chances of anyone downloading a working copy are very small and they will usually give up trying after 2 or 3 failed attempts. I don't really know if you can do this, but it sounded interesting. |
