I recently did "paper reading", as described in "Cold Reading Variations" by Richard Webster, at an event at my school.
I had a swami boon on my thumb, and started the effect by mentioning that I was still an apprentice at paper reading, so I usually liked doing another mental test to see how well my overall "connection" with the person was. I asked them to think of a 4 digit number, and pretended to write it down on a piece of paper. I went on to do paper reading. For the patter, I told them how the ancient Chinese would interpret cracks on turtle shells to divinate, and how I was going to divinate with paper today. Paper reading was my first try at cold reading personalities, but I got a few hits that night, and impressed a lot of participants. At the end of each performance, I told the spectator to reveal their number, and then swami wrote the number. I spoke with some of the other organizers at the event, and they said a few people told them about how amusing the paper reading was. I definitely recommended "Cold Reading Variations" for anyone starting out with cold reading, or for people who want a fortune telling effect but don't want to do palm reading, etc. I think paper reading is great because you cold read based on how a person handles the paper, and it won't turn off people who don't like new age and occult fortune telling. |

I have used this a couple of times, though I prefer the color readings from the same book. I used corian tile samples.
