I bought the self working number magic by Karl Fulves. I'm interested in learning things where you figure out the answer faster than someone with a calculator. In the book it showed some examples but said it left out the more common ways of doing things and would discuss more of the unknown ways of doing it. I was wondering where I can find the more common ways of doing things.
Thanks. |

I can't believe I'm saying this but if you don't have any other books, Mathematical Wizardry would be a good one for you.
It has a lot of stuff.

I just got interested in the math stuff recently so there isn't very much in any of the books I have. Thanks, even if you can't believe you said it...........

What's with that $94 thing?...They are inexpensive. You may get several of these kinds of books also.
Mathematics, Magic and Mystery, is my favorite

Yes, DON'T pay $94 (or more) for the first Benjamin book
that Nir listed. The second Benjamin book listed is an updated version of the first book. It's in print...and available for much less than $94. Only pay $94 for the first edition if you want to support greedy used book dealers. That being said, I agree with Nir. This book (under either title) is a must-have! Slim's Gardner recommendation is also right on. Stan |

With regard to outrageous used book dealer prices:
http://www.sonic.net/maledicta/vultures.html If the $94 were going to Arthur Benjamin, it'd be a different story. But none of the $94 makes its way to Art...or to Michael Shermer. |

There's always Arthur Benjamin's Mathemagics video.
Several of the feats in my Mental Gym (check out Doug Canning's Mental Shopper!) and on my Grey Matters Blog would qualify, as well. Here's a few books on speed math, mostly with listings that allow you to compare prices: * Secrets of Mental Math (Arthur Benjamin) * Math Magic (Scott Flansburg) * Speed Mathematics (Bill Handley) * Rapid Math (Ed Julius) * More Rapid Math (Ed Julius) * Rapid Math Without A Calculator * The Trachtenberg Speed System of Basic Mathematics (Jakow Trachtenberg) * Just about anything in the Mathemagic section Also, if you want to learn some important presentational points about making number routines interesting to your audiences, I highly suggest Docc Hilford's Book of Numbers, Vol. 1, Vol. 2 and Vol. 3. |

Speaking of Arthur Benjamin...
I just talked to a friend who attended the Los Angeles Conference on Magic History. Dr. Benjamin lectured. Of course his lecture included demonstrations of his own calculating abilities. Needless to say, he killed. |

A very, very interesting source for fast calculations demos came to me from a documentary on Daniel Tammet: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Tammet
you can see the docu in parts here: part 1: http://youtube.com/watch?v=AbASOcqc1Ss part 2: http://youtube.com/watch?v=WfoGsXYLxcs&feature=related part 3: http://youtube.com/watch?v=o7oEdE2XjXE&feature=related part 4: http://youtube.com/watch?v=UqLzoiVzEY8&feature=related part 5: http://youtube.com/watch?v=qMz3gjl9x-M now look at part 4 (time stamp 3:25 to 5:25 - watch the entire 2 minutes) - there are young Japanese kids who learn to ***visualize*** a use of an abacus to perform lightning calculations. if this is true, it is pretty amazing - I would be happy if some people here have references to how to learn this skill. (I did see some stuff at wikipedia) N. |

I'm just really using for job interview purposes to set me apart from the competition..............

La9, don't know if you were joking or not, but as a hiring manager at a large technology company, I've interviewed over 500 candidates for tech support positions and would be interested in what context you would use certain mathematical demonstrations as a means of setting yourself apart from the competition ... really, I would. One of my final questions in any interview is to ask a candidate what it is that sets them apart from anyone else I might be considering ...
Thanks, Oscar |

I did not see it listed, but The Magic Book by Harry Lorayne has an excellent chapter on math magic.

I wrote two books for you - MIRACLE MATH and MATHEMATICAL WIZARDRY. The former, I guess, would be considered "clever shortcuts," the latter will teach you math effects that will make you look like a genius (when you're not) - some "killers" therein. I'm not trying to sell you anything because - I hardly have any left of each. So - too bad, you'll have to go with the great listings above. (Yes, I teach magic square stuff in The Magic Book [again, basically out of print] and in Reputation-Makers - now re-written and updated in LORAYNE: THE CLASSIC COLLECTION, Vol. 2 - oh, and in AGELESS MEMORY.) Harry, you modest miracle maker.
Your work with root 9 in The Magic Book has kept me in drinks for thirty years. I am going to go to my library and look through MATHEMATICAL WIZARDRY. I have been lazy for a while and its time to start reading again. My goal in life is to read as many books as you have written. Thanks for all that you have done for magic. And thanks for sharing with us here. Peace, Parson

Here's a presentation by Arthur Benjamin: Lightning calculation and other "Mathemagic", at a TED talk. Well worth taking a few minutes to view. Excellent presentation, shortcuts for the most part, then a sprinkling of hidden 'magic' to end with!

Should he be allowed only the 30% or 40% markup that a retail outlet will charge? What about used books that simply sit on the shelf and never move at all? As an author and a publisher, I don't worry about used book sales. They are actually irrelevant to my business. Once the book has been printed, I need to sell it. Once I have sold it and distributed the royalties to the author, if it's not a book that I wrote, then it's history. If it quadruples in price, that's the breaks. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. How do you feel when you pay full bore for a hardback of a book, and then two or three weeks later find it remaindered out? That happens, too. Is it the greedy bookseller who is at fault? It's not the seller who is responsible for checking prices. It's the buyer. That's why looking at ALL the prices in an Amazon.com listing can be very helpful to you.
