I got Bobo's in July, yet I'm having a hard time going through the text to find effects that I'll want to use. I have a grip on the sleights, so what effects from Bobo's do you use and would recommend for me to master?

Acchessor,
I am not sure if the Dover edition has this, but the hard cover from Magic Inc. has a chapter on Routines. Perhaps you might want to study the effects within the routines and use those for examples for effects to learn. I am of the opinion that Modern Coin Magic contains enough great material to make you an accomplished performer with coins. I am in no way suggesting that you ignore the later sources by Roth, Dr. Rubenstein, or others, but rather that Modern Coin Magic is both an excellent introduction to coin magic, plus a perpetual reference resource that you will use the rest of your life. It seems that every genre of Magic/Mentalism has its foundation books: For Mentalism: Annemann's Practical Mental Magic, Corinda's 13 Steps to Mentalism Cards: Card College, Royal Road to Card Magic COINS: Modern Coin Magic, Richard Kaufman's CoinMagic. Jon Racherbaumer even suggested that CoinMagic be read right along with Bobo's. General Magic: Greater Magic, The Art of Magic, Tarbell Course in Magic, Mark Wilson's Course in Magic, Lorayne's The Magic Book. There are many more of course, but this short list should be in every Magician/Mentalist's library IMHO. Best, Vlad |

I won't recommend any particular tricks for you to use because you really have to find what's right for you.
Learn an 'in-hands' trick or two for when no surface is available. Learn a couple for table work. Early ones I learned were some of the Quick Tricks, 'Winged Silver', 'The Traveling Centavos' and one of the 'Coins thru the Table' tricks. I still do variations of these. I still do 'The Gadabout Coins', a var. of 'Just Pretend', 'Coin to Key' as a lead in to a key trick. |

Jaz,
I did pretty much the same. The Quick Tricks chapter is a great place to start - and to revisit! Best, Vlad |

I would recommend that you start by learning effects that can be done in your hands, or at the most using someone elses hands. This will enable you to preform anywhere you like without any restrictions.
As far as the type of effects, well, as mentioned in another post that depends on what you like and enjoy preforming. I can suggest however, that you start with the simple stuff so that you get used to preforming and also work on your prsentation as that plays a big part in how effective the effect seems to your audiance. Good Luck And Enjoy |

Let me just say the whole book has it all. You can take any trick in the book and make it a master piece. Its writen back when rock was soft so it might seem boring at first, but if you just use your noodle (brain) you can take any trick and change the presentation (update) for the year 2007.
Great book and it has every sleight you'll ever need. or until you become one of us and just have to know every new slieght out thier. When in reality you could just use one out of that book and accomplish the same thing....lol Tim

While I agree and acknowledge that you do have to find what's best for you, sometimes that process takes time. I think it's a fair question for someone who is just starting with coins to ask. I've heard it asked by other people before, and I don't mind. I'll offer a suggestion. Jaz's post is excellent (as usual). Try Gadabout Coins from Bobo's. Good place to start. Pay attention to what you like and don't like about it. Follow your path from there.

One that I like since I have read about it recently is the one trick were 4 coins one by one leave your hand and fall in the cup in your other hand. I forgot what it is called, but I have been playing around with that routine lately. There is a lot of material, and I have had trouble finishing it as well...I got it in July 2006...I know, I am terrible, not even half way through it... -DP

I love Gaddabout Coins from Bobo. Just regular coins, no gaffs, and the responses are great. It's also a routine that utilizes and allows you to master some great sleights, i.e. classic palm, utility switch, and a good click pass. Dan Watkins has a great video of this routine on his sight, Coinvanish.com. Like him, I have adapted the routine a bit, because Bobo's version tends to drag on a bit. I also use a different click pass, but regardless, this is a great routine.
Bobo also has some good routines with a Copper/Silver coin. Hope this helps. |

I would suggest that you pick something from the chapter on Coins Across that you find fun to do. Four Coins to a Glass, Winged Silver, and Gadabout Coins are all nice effects that you can tailor to make your own.
You could also take a few of the items from the Quick Tricks chapter and string them together into a short routine. Another favorite of mine from Bobo's is Silver or Copper Extraction in the Coin Classics chapter. I don't think it's as popular as many effects in the book because it uses a handkerchief, but if you can get past that one detail, I think you'll really like it. |

I have to second the idea of looking through the Quick tricks first. I went through the entire book for my Modern Coin Magic DVD and the quick tricks were the ones that I remembered most from my early days in magic. They're quick to learn and eay to master because there's not a lot of patter or moves to memorize. That way you can quickly build confidence in doing the moves and creating a presentation.
Best of Luck! It's a fantastic book! Ben S

Acc, I've had this wonderful book since I was a kid. I didn't totally understand it then but somehow it has stayed with me all this time. The hardcover edition is the better version, but the paperback is still good enough to get you started and move you on down the road.
IMHO, there are too many wonderful tricks and moves in the book to have a favorite really, but I would say get a handle on the Coins Across and Copper/ Silver Transpo stuff, as they are themes in coin magic that greatly repeat themselves in the overall experience, still to this day that I see. And a good Coins Across should be a part of every young man's training and upbringing, whether a magician or not. The magic in this effect is that of people interaction and instant amazement and the bringing of smiles and honest openess. It opens hearts and minds, even doors. I know you said you have a "grip" on the sleights, but you will find out that there's a lot more to it than these "grips".. Time and practice are the key elements in blending the sleights into bigger things, making them work seamlessly with other intangibles like misdirection, etc. Your thinking will change many times and you will see and feel things you haven't felt before, with those same grips...They never change, but you will. It's quite an interesting road. The Quick Tricks are nice as my friend Ben Salinas points out. And he should know as he was the magi that brought the famous book alive in dvd form, incidentally a great video accompaniment to the book. Those tricks are nice hit&run effects, but you will tire of them quickly and want more, you'll see. Eventually, Bobo's is all about not necessarily what's in the book but what you get out of it toward everything else that's not written there...That part of the journey is in you. And believe me, I know... Yep, it most certainly is great book...Wherever you want to go, you can get there from here. Enjoy! -Mb

Ben,
I have the advantage that most here on the Café do not have - I know you. And your approach to magic has always pleased me. I am pleased to see that your chops are gaining the recognition they deserve. Continued success to you! Best, Vlad |
