A magician friend told me about a seance he attended involving the use of a black stone. Something along the lines of the participants holding the stone to imbue it with their anger, then washing the stone in a basin of water to cleanse it. Then they hold the stone to charge it with their love. Finally they focus and watch the stone in the light of a flickering candle (to see visions or whatever.) Can anyone confirm or elaborate on this and/or suggest where it might be written up? Thanks.

Rick Maue has an effect in his killer book Haunted magic that uses a black stone. Not quite as you describe, but it is a very nice effect.

It sounds very much like, as a matter of fact, just like Brother Shadow's "Have Seance Will Travel". Tony Andruzzi did a similar routine with his "Ceremony of the Rock". It's based on. . . well, that wouldn't be any fun, that's the direction you need to go, I leave it to you to explore.

Have Seance will Travel uses a stone as a focus... and is a great routine.

Traveler has a couple of things that are already transcribed for next year's release of Traveler's Journal.
Historically, Dr. Dee supposedly used Obsidian (black volcanic glass) for his young assistant to scrye. I have received several PM's in the last 2 weeks on this type of effect. Amazing that the world is working on the same type thing. Lary/TEB3/Traveler |

Scrying in dark black glass... Always a good one. Love the Glass from Leng the most... Sometimes things come out of it and grab ya...
Speaking of which, Incorruptible has got my imagination going - If the demon tendrils work (ala A's Demon Dirt) - Imagine cthulhoid beastie tentacles coming from beyond the veil thru the dark dimensional gate of the glass... Suddenly you close the portal cutting the tentacles off but leaving their physical ends behind... ala the Clark Ashton Smith story... That would be fun... Seance/Spooky show combo with a Cthulhoid theme (besides the ATMOM of Docc's)... Actually I'll add that to my Tindalos act...

Have Seance Will Travel is really not a theatrical seance in the usual sense. Nor is it exactly a genuine attempt at spirit contact. Bro. Shadow managed to create a seance that exists between these two extremes. A real seance that can be done without a guilty conscience.

It's a powerful piece. I've seen it bring tears to people's eyes.

Tony Andruzzi performed the Ceremony of the Rock late one night at one of the Invocational conventions. I was too far away to get the full effect. What was fascinating to me about the experience was that a room in which a boozy, raucous party had been going on was transformed in a matter of minutes into a ceremonial space, and a circle of magicians was sitting on the floor, listening with rapt attention. Tony could command pinpoint focus with his voice and presence. That was his gift.
