I was fortunate to catch Max's show in Hollywood a couple of weeks ago, it was VERY entertaining. I went with my Magic Partner, Berteig the Bearded, who happens to be one of those Cal Tech geniuses and actually knew most of the myriad of obscure and zany intellectual references that make Max's show such a delight.
It is a fine evening of storytelling and unique pieces, but I think out of two hours there may have been maybe 5 or 6 effects, all of which were brilliant, but that should give you a sense of how much was trickery and how much was Max being Max. Unlike a lot of magic performances, this didn't insult our intelligence, it treated us like we are highly intelligent adults and caringly shared with us some amazing stories and educated us along the way. My boys also attended (aged 17) who also enjoyed it immensely. Somewhere along the line, a fairly recent documentary was made called Max Maven: A Fabulous Monster which highlights a large amount of the evening show as well as provides some nice background. I picked it up and really enjoyed it. Get it if you can! SHIBARAKU! (one of many brilliant things Max explained during the evening and very profound and well...Funny!) On another note, this months Genii contains a nice write up of Max.

Max is the man!!! It's a fantastic show and is a lesson for all of us on what it means to entertain.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I am now buzzing that I will get to see one of my influences in the flesh. HOORAY! I can't wait. I shall be taking all my family for christmas. $20, must not grumble...
Clifford do you know anything about the theatre and its performances? The programs for past and future shows looks very intruiging to say the least. It sounds like something Smith and Cowman should be part of... http://www.steveallentheater.com/

I just tried to buy tickets but to no avail. Was this only on for one night? I can't figure it out. Have I missed it?
