Who brought this one back? In the past 5 weeks I've turned more than 3 dozen cocobolo sticks for people doing this effect. I looked everywhere to see if a retailer was selling a new release but couldn't find any reason this became popular again.

Is required a duplicate for Skinner's handling ?

The Skinner version does not use a duplicate.
I've been doing the classic version using a borrowed ring, no duplicate, from the Stars of Magic, for 45 years. I've also done the Leipzig version, also from the Stars of Magic, as a back-up. It uses a duplicate in a very subtle way. Borrowed ring on wand (stick), if done properly, is one of the strongest effects in magic. |

Jim Ryan taught me his handling of his version of this many, many years ago, and I've used it ever since. It's STRONG Magic, done close-up and in the spectators' ( I use at least 2, sometimes 3, spectators ) hands. Never fails to get a GREAT response.
You can find it in Jerry Mentzer's Rings book, in Jim Ryan's Lecture Notes, it's the first trick in Jay's Jinking Rings, and it is also in Abbott 's Encyclopedia of Rope Tricks. HIGHLY recommended! |

I did a wand a couple of years ago for Martin Lewis, who, requested it for this specific effect, with bullet-nose tips. I've never seen him do the effect, or, heard any more from him about it. I keep forgetting to ask, but, remain curious to see his routine if he developed it further. Maybe I can ask him on Facebook about that.

The "tricky part" in the ring on stick has been , for many, the "loading" of the ring.
Flip Hallema had the "answer", and tipped it many years ago. I've used it ever since. There's no "tell"!

Is there much of a different reaction if compared to ring and rope?

Dick, I've never had a problem loading the ring from CP--I just have to be careful--but I would be interested in knowing what Flip Hallema's "answer" was.
Nick W, I would say the difference between ring on stick and ring on rope is visual. With ring on stick, when revealing the ring on the stick, the ring can be "spun" and is much more impressive. |

Hey Dick--
Greedy son of a gun that I am, can you PM me the Flip tip as well? I've worked with Bev a time or two on the subtleties of Ring on Stick, but any help with that certain moment would be very useful. |

Guys...
Dick showed me the Flip "tip" for the ring load last time he was over at my house, and he's right, it's the real deal. We were focusing on a few of the fine details of Jim Ryan's routine...specifically going over the correct handling of the G.W.Hunter shoelace tie sequence, and also the best type of rope/cord to use for this bit.....I found some of the "right stuff" red "thick" cord that, in my experience, at least, offers the smoothest handling for this particular trick, and I gave some to Dick and kept some for myself. I think I picked this up at JoAnne's...if I can find the name of it I will post it here. |
