I’ve been building Zig-Zag for myself, so I can fit in. I’ve problem with middle box. Would it be better idea to put the door on back side of cabinet, or would it be better to use doors at the front, as usual? Or would it be good idea to use two doors at the front; one at lower box and one in upper box?
If there’s no door on the middle box, the middle box will keep its shape better and also it would be easier to make the sl***ng p***l. Also I’ve been thinking make the sl***ng p***l only so the graphic part moves, not the whole p***l. Does anybody have experiences with the unit or any building experiences? |

Having the doors on the front gives the audience a view into the box, hence the "apearance" of it being ungimmicked in any way (one of thos things they see, but you don't actually say). Having only an upper and lower door on the front would not make any sense, because then you would have to have the assistant stoop down and slide up into position, which would not look good...the audience is thinking, "Why have the upper door open and not one in the middle? Magi must be hiding something there......" With my Zig Zag, the middle box was a little problem as far as holding it's shape, but I added 8 small corner braces to it, and that gave it the stability I needed....the top and bottom were designed to fold down, but with the braces, the middle box no longer would fold down...no problem, as it is the smallest box anyway. I think everything you mentioned was probably considered by the originator and others since, but they are still made the way they are for a reason...it works. Not trying to stifle your creativity, but if you are going to the trouble, time and expense of building one yourself, I would recommend staying with the tried and true. This is a great illusion! The audience never gets tired of seeing it. Good luck.

I have to agree with dbearden. It would be very suspicious indeed to have two parts open one way and a third part open differently. My Zig-Zag (now deceased) was fairly wobbly as well. I like the idea of the corner braces - that should make it rigid/stable enough to not have to worry so much about the working of it.
