“Turning Tricks” is the title of a new set of lecture notes that I’ve acquired. Written by a great magician from the New Jersey/New York area, David Corsaro. I first had the privilege of seeing Dave perform and lecture just recently at Metro-magic 3. For those that reference that thread will see how much I enjoyed his lecture.
The subject of this thread is to briefly discuss/review Dave’s lecture notes. I just received them last night and read through them. To quote from Dave’s introduction, “The goal of these notes is to get you to think about your magic and how to improve it.” I couldn’t have summed it up any better. I’ll get to the effects in a minute; I’d first like to briefly discuss some of the short essays that introduce some of the effects. Two of which stood out for me, “Jump” and “My Jersey Style.” “Jump” talks about our freedom to do what we want in a magic effect. The audience doesn’t know where we’re going until the end, and that really we’re free to do what we want as long as everything is logical. I think many of us forget this idea, I know I do at times. It’s important to realize, especially if we make a mistake, that they don’t know what we’re doing. If we make a mistake that don’t know! Don’t point it out, just go along and get back on track. “My Jersey Style” talks about his approach to mentalism. Notice I say, “His approach.” Dave states throughout the notes that all of it is his approach to make things work for him and encourages the reader to develop his own presentation for the effects. Anyways, the essay discusses that rather than using mentalism as “I can read minds” to use it as intuition. Dave gives good examples why he feels this way, I’ll leave it up to you to grab the notes and find out why. Finally the part you’ve all been waiting for, the tricks! LOL…All of the effects included are great however three stood out for me. One of which is “Bye, Bye Birdie.” It’s a card trick for kids!!! I’ve spent many a night in the restaurant worrying about which effects to do for little children and wish I knew about this one in advance. The child picks a pictured flash card and it vanishes from one pile and appears in a pile that the child was holding. The second trick that stood out was “Getting to Know You.” The title says it all, how many times have we found ourselves at a table and forgotten a spectator’s name, for whatever reason. I’ve done it many times and I’m usually very good with names, at least I used to be lol…This effect forces you to get to know you spectators and it’s a great overall trick as well. I plan on adding this one to my set immediately. Finally the last trick I enjoyed was “Can I Call You Sometime.” It’s another version of “Triumph” but with one of the best presentations I’ve ever read. A spectator thinks of a phone number from a list of cocktail napkins, the cards are then mixed face-up and face-down. When the cards are spread all the cards are face-down with the exception of ten cards. Those ten cards are the numbers for the previously selected phone number. Great presentation and a very slick method. Overall, for those that didn’t see Dave’s lecture, you really missed out. However, if you want some great magic for your act and some great short essays on presentation and theory get a hold of Dave and order the notes. He was kind enough to send me a copy for my collection and I only think it fair I review them here. There really isn’t a bad thing in these notes and they’re definitely worth the time and investment. If anyone has any questions about my review feel free to shoot me a PM. -Bill |

Thanks for the review Bill. Glad you enjoyed the notes. I have been very fortunate to get some great review from others as well:
“It was a pleasure reading David Corsaro’s lecture notes, ‘Turning Tricks.’ The biggest compliment I can give them – and it happens to be 100% true – is that David’s material is so well thought out and “complete”, that there are several items that I would be thrilled to immediately add to my own personal repertoire.” – Daryl “’Turning Tricks’ is clever and highly entertaining. It is made for real people in real conditions. It has something for every audience from kids at a birthday party to drunken guys in a bar! One of the effects will go straight to my repertoire. I am sure you will find one for you too!" -- Boris Wild “I enjoyed reading David Corsaro's lecture notes because they express his enthusiasm, ability and experience in magic. The reader receives good effects and presentational advice - all worthwhile reading.” -- Herb Zarrow If you want more information, go to http://www.davidcorsaro.com Also, keep your eyes open for my upcoming DVD produced by Richard Sanders David
