So I started with Royal Road, and then bought the card colleges (well, only 1,2,3). I have a few dvds as well. my question is what would be the next book to get? I'm sure that every book would have something to offer but what would be the next logical step?

Not sure what a "logical" next step would be. Everybody's tastes, abilites, and goals are different. Seems you're off to a good start with RR and CC. A few others that come to my mind are:
Steve Beam's Semi-Automatic Card Tricks series S. W. Erdnase's Expert At The Card Table Harry Lorayne's Close Up Card Magic AND... a book with NO tricks - Darwin Ortiz Strong Magic (an indispensable treatise on magic theory) Also, this may help... http://magicref.tripod.com/books.htm Ron

Work you way through the material again and again first. Then think of the next steps

I second Andy-san.
Next step is to practice sleights and tricks you learned. Third step is to show mastered tricks for people many times. Then you will be preapred to go further. Hideo Kato |

RR & CC are for beginners yes? If so is the material covered the same?? Or is it different material. I am halfway through RR now but find myself going back more often than moving forward - seems it will take me forever.

I hear ya DMG.. there's so much information in just royal road and card college. The card colleges are (IMHO) better because they're more in depth. Basically all the information in royal road is in the card college series but each author teaches it a little different, with a little nuance of how to hold your pinky here, etc. I've been studying magic for about a year and a half now and yes, the material in these books is so incredibly vast that I keep going back to the beginning to start over. So, yes, Andy and Hideo, excellent advice. I've been doing just that. I was just wondering what book would help me out even further with a different way to DL or palm or side steal or whatever. Just little tips to improve the stuff I've learned from the books I already have. Thanks for the list R.S. That Ortiz book with no tricks looks awesome. That's basically what I wanted. Thanks so much everyone!

Why not invest in the 4th and perhaps the 5th and last volume of Card College? I have the entire series and I refer to them constantly. It will be a long time before you absorb/master all the knowledge/material that the Card College series has to offer. Treat it as an encyclopedia or reference that can be revisited as needed. Interest is created and maintained by variety so feel free to surround yourself with as much reading material as you can muster and afford. Look to the classics as they are never outdated, Larry Jennings, Harry Lorayne, Dai Vernon, Ed Marlo are a few authors that have classic material. Have fun reading and absorbing!

Mastering all of Royal Road takes a lifetime. Mastering all of Card College takes several lifetimes. Don't be afraid to read other books while continuing to work on something else.
If you feel that you are going more back then forwards, focus -- don't try to practice too many things in parallel. |

Course' the biggest prob for me right now is that RR was $14 and CC is likie $170 or something...

Easy to Master Card Miracles by Michael Ammar is a good place to go after Card College. After that Stars of Magic,Impossibilia,Smoke and Mirrors(Bannon) and Art of Astonishment(Harris).

I bought Card College 1-5 from Circle City Magic for $150.00 with free shipping.
Although it is a bit pricey it is by far the best magic purchase I have ever made. |

I would listen to Hideo. You say you started with RR and then card college. How long ago? If it's only been a year, I don't know if you should look ahead yet. Card College has many great things to offer as well as Royal Road.
If and when you venture forward it would be a matter of what do you want to do? Just close-up cards, all-around close-up? If just cards, Harry Lorayne has many great things to offer. The card books by Vernon are also a great addition to any library. Don't be afraid to get some of the older books as well as newer ones. It is a good idea to studay where things came from and how they developed.

Once you get through Card College you should be ready to start working on stuff of your own. You have most of the tools available to a card worker, start innovating and trying things out. Use other sources for inspiration not for new effects that you can do.
That's my opinion of someone who has not really mastered the entire contents of any of my books. There are lots of things to learn.
