Forget the cheap stuff. Save up and spring for Lassen. you will be happy. I would suggest pre 1900.

IMO when you go for quality, you get quality. The only time I would think you would want to use a cheap prop is if you are perfoming over an unforgiving surface that will damage it if you drop it. OR you think somebody is going to 'borrow' your equipment with no intention of returning it.

I buy the logic above. Why work with old silver coins worth $20+ a piece and then buy some cheap shell?

The price difference between the cheap Morgan shells (at least what I've seen) and the custom gaff makers Morgan shell is not very much.

I'm not really sure what "cheap" morgan shells mean. Is the johnson produced shell cheap?
