Dear IBM members,
Sorry to bother you with this but I've had a call recently from a journalist here in the UK asking about a competition that is rumoured to have taken place in Las Vegas at the Luxor Hotel and Casino on 16th November. The guy who apparently came 2nd is the subject of the article this journalist is writing. He (the magician) goes by the name of Ledger (although his real name is Alan Macklethwaite). The competition was apparently won by the legendary Rene Lavand. The reason I post this here is that Ledger claims to be an IBM member. I've searched high and low for proof of his existence but so far have nothing about him or the competition. Anyone got any answers or clues that might help? All the best, Matt |

Well you apparently didn't read the reply to your post in "going for the gold" to this question. Whether or not Ledger or Alan Macklethwaite is a member of IBM probably could only be answered by the IBM staff, did you try contacting them? Contact info is on their webpage. Rene Lavand (actually it is spelled Levand) does not compete in competitions, he doesn't need to. He already has the reputation of being one of the finest in the world, and to be honest, nobody could possibly compete with him, especially one handed. He does with one hand what many have trouble doing with two. There are a number of magic conventions held in Las Vegas every year. The only one I know of with a competition is the World Magic Seminar held generally in feb, but this next year it will be in April. I was at last years WMS and nobody named Ledger from the UK won anything. As far as the Luxor Hotel and Casino hosting a convention or competition dealing with magic, you can contact the hotel and see if such a group was indeed there on Nov 16th. Had there been a competition on Nov 16 at the Luxor that Rene Levand was entered into, every magic magazine in the U.S. would have covered it and you would have found it posted in probably half a dozen of the forums here on the board. There are state and regional competitions such as the annual Texas Association of Magicians competition. And there are national and international competitions, such as IBM convention, SAM convention, and FISM. Other groups such as the UK's Magic Circle have their own competitions as well. As a member of the Academy of Magical Arts (the Magic Castle), to the best of my knowledge our annual awards for close up magician, magician of the year, etc. are not based on a given competition. A group called the International Magicians Society run by New York Magician Tony Hassini gives out some awards , such as magician of the year, but these are not based on a given competiton, but based on a decision of the groups board.
My guess is based on the information about the competition you provided above, that Ledger is an individual full of hot air, taking advantage of an ocean's separation and a reporters laziness to verify facts to get some undeserved publicity.
