Hi guys,
I'm thinking here, WHY does the book in english not have the summary at the end of a chapter??? In the original version (spanish), at the end of every chapter it has a summary with the important ideas...and I liked that. Regards, Mesquita

The reason those were taken out is that they were not complete or consistent. They were Ascanio's personal notes that he used as reminders when he lectured. He would include little words that would trigger a thought, and he would omit things that he could easily remember. They were originally written on file cards and by no means intended for publication. To include them in a printed book, they would need to be reworked. It's an editorial choice like others that have been made between author Jesús Etcheverry and myself. To remove those notes was my idea. The Table of Contents will give you a more consistent summary.

Although I responded to mesquita directly with a PM, with a more thorough
explanation. Here is the rest of it for other visitors of this thread. The main reason to include those summaries in the Spanish version was that Ascanio wrote them, but he did so for himself and in a style that was not meant for publication. Yet, in the Spanish edition they make sense because the reader gets to see the actual words he wrote. In a translation, some things are a little different. If I want to alter something written by the author, my friend Jesús Etcheverry, I can always check with him, but these notes were written by Ascanio himself and there is no way to do them justice. If I translate them and leave them as they are, they would look like a bad translation. If we change them into a more formal style, we would be defeating their purpose. R |

Rafael,
Is there anything really important that the English reader misses out on by not having a translation of the notes? For the sake of completeness obviously it would be nice to have everything, but if the important stuff is all in the text, I'll wait a while before starting my Spanish lessons. |

You're not missing anything. If you read the book, that is. But you can find other good uses for Spanish lessons.
