Ok... Everyone has a sleight of hand trick (or at they should have) that they LOVE with a great passion as they seen another magician performing it and said to themselves "I have to perform this trick... No matter what". But when they do eventually find this trick somewhere, they discover a snag, there is a part of the trick that they cant quite perfect, so they don't perform it for others, they just keep plugging away at it until they get it right. Some people keep it going for years yet they wont give up as they love the trick so much.
So I put up this post for two reasons, firstly I thought it would be fun to hear other magi's thought on this and second, maybe other magi's can help them get over their stumbling block? Neat? Anyway, mine is Open Travellers by Larry Jennings... I've perfected every part of this trick except for (and I hope I'm not giving anything away here) laying down two cards as one... I find that one always slides a bit and I can never make it seem natural. So has anyone got some suggestions as to DVDs or books that I could look up to find ways around this? I think this is going to be a topic with a lot of PMs between people and helpful tips for everyone... or at least I hope so. |

You need to find and get Ascanio's book on holding, setting down, etc. 2 cards as one.

Mine is NFW - I can't seem to hold a double. I can DL, but holding a double while at the same time spreading the others in the hand is too unnatural...........

Any version of Vernon's travellers. This is one of my favorite tricks to perform, but I have yet to find one within my grasp.

The small ninja Rings. I can do the big ones like a champ, but have not gotten the Shoot moves down at all.

Open Travelers by Larry Jennings.
The last card gives me all kinds of problems. Not the rub, or vanish of the card, but the transfer of the last ace to the pile while setting the other aside. I don't conceal cards well and have yet to develop some solid "misdirection" to cover the move. With the others no problem but the one card by itself, murder. Reading the back of Expert Card Technique per the suggestion of He Who Can't Be Named has started a positive thinking process about this though. pepka I'm curious, how do you perform something outside your grasp? I would think with this ability you would have dang near everything covered! |

My current favorites are the coins across I do in my stage show (Max Howard's 'How To Make The Eagles Fly') and Undivided (Lewis' T&R Cigarette Paper).

This isn't a trick, but I love the Mora/Vernon wand spin. I can do it maybe 6 or 7 out of 10 times so I can't use it in my routine. I have settled on the Williamson Striking Vanish for the only wand vanish in my routine.

Don't give up on the wand spin, it is far more gracefull than the strike vanish.

Pete is 100% right. The striking vanish is so over-rated. Even when Ammar does it with the cups, it looks like just what he's doing. I use it impromptu with a coin and a pen for coin in pencap. I also hold the coin at the fintertips. This way it looks pretty good.
Back to the wand spin. I struggle with it a bit. I can't get the exact handling down. I've been admonished by purists and they usually back down after I point out that the wand spins, and the ball vanishes. So who cares if it's not what's in the book. Quote:

Thanks Pete and pepka for the encouragement. I use the striking vanish to mix things up I guess. Personally, I don't think it's THAT bad. When I saw Ammar do it on video it fooled me. I don't know if laymen will get what's going on. But, I would much rather do the wand spin vanish.
I have been practicing recently with the wand spin and I can do it really well in front of a mirror, but I don't know if I can do it if I can't see myself doing it. Also, I perform sitting down and I don't know if I can do the wand spin sitting down. I will keep practicing, though. |

If you want to see some beautiful vanishes for cups and balls go to youtube and look at Michael Vincent's version. He has a really nice touch on the first one. Also, if you can get your hands on Tommy Wonder's video where he does the 2 cup routine, there is a vanish that will blow by most magicians. I use it occasionally if I have to do the cups in fast company.

Pete, as always thank you for your wisdom.... I will try to track down that book as I just am so fascinated and in love with Open Travellers, I first saw another close up magician that I had met do it when I started out in magic, and I said to myself "Holy Christ.... that's the most magical thing that I have ever seen". So about a year later I found it and to this day I've never performed it as the trick means so much to me I wont risk messing it up.... Funny what a few paste boards can do to a grown man?

I have a 3/8 inch Tabman wand that's about 13 inches in length. I think it works a LOT better than my old plastic wand. I was thinking about getting the Mercury Wand, but then I heard that it dents cups.

I wish I could do all the staff from DARWIN ORTIZ, but my faro shufle is not even close to perfect, so I perfom those tricks just for me.
I am also forgatting my memorized deck.

I do the drop backwards on my wand spin - ie: on the way UP. Never saw it in print or on DVD, but watched Vernon do it and went home and did what I THOUGHT I SAW.
Actually, now I can also do it correctly, ala Vernon's drop.

That's funny Pete, can you still do it backward? I gotta see that.

Woah, that probably involves a lot more timing. How long did you do that? Years?
