I did this trick that I thought I invented at a magic convention last Summer, and the magician I showed my original trick to took one look at my trick and said "Aha, The Hindu Hangman". I said you mean there is a name for the only original trick I do?
My trick is done with the gimmicked piece of rope from linking ropes. You load the smaller piece of rope tied and in the knot and inside of that knot is a folded-in-half card that you forced. I then fish for the forced card with the bigger piece of rope from my top hat. Looking at Ian's linking ropes reminded me of "The Hindu Hangman". If I went too fast PM me for a slower version.

The linking rope gimmick to fish a card out of a hat was an effect sold by d. robbins, and it was called card from hat or something like that. I remember selling that in the 70's. It came with one rope that had that gimmick.
I always showed it to guys who owned the linking ropes. However, "hindu Hangman" was not the name of the robbins or "ez-magic" version.

Well, Al's an oldie and he still plays well, so I guess they go together.

Al,
That trick is on the wonderful Paul Potassy video's. He's been doing it for decades and is and has been a mainstay for him. You would enjoy watching him perform it if you can get a chance to check it out!! Ted L |

There is even a version on the market right now that uses a signed card! No force! I have replaced my "Lassoed card" with this no force version.
This trick is several decades old. My first version was purchaced in 1978 or so from Tannen's and performed in kids shows using an "Old Maid" deck.

The rope volume length x width x height plus card might be prohibitive in a pocket.

Ian,
I was hoping for something a bit different than the classic "Card on Rope". I'm the eternal optimist...always wanting to believe the hype for a new trick (and ending up with a drawer full of rejects...except for yours of course!). Andy

Gaeton Bloom has a version in his lecture
where the rope is normal. Very clever thinking as always from Gaeton. |
