I need to create a sparking sword effect for a theater show. Is there anything commercially available? I've read theories on how to do this effect on other posts. I am not interested in ideas of how to do this, I need to find something that is ready to go or find someone that can build something that will work immediately.

You get nice sparks from a 12 volt car battery when you cross the wires. You can make this work in your sword fight by hooking up a car battery to two metal plates on the stage floor, one positive and one negative. Each sword fighter has a metal sword that is attached to a wire running down the pant leg and is soldered to a metal plate on the heel of each actor's shoe. The handle of each sword is insulated with electrician's tape so the actors don't get shocks from this experience. When the actors step onto the floor plates and make contact with their metal heel plates, all they have to do is touch swords to get some nice sparks where the swords touch one another. Charge the battery before each performance. Those portable car jumper batteries work nicely for this.

Ok, really not trying to kill our actors.

Be careful! I once blew up a car battery by accidentally touching the conductors together.
Surely there's something that can be done with static electricity that would be much safer.

Forget the battery, use a battery charger instead (Same hookup as spellbinder). A charger has a cutoff to keep it from overheating or blowing up. I have used this method before with no problems whatsoever. A common prop in the haunted house industry, and they do it for hours at a time.

I cannot think of anything that would be ready to go "Out of the box", and it would be really difficult to build the thing without having all of the specs of the stage.
The actual set up (On site) would only take about 15-20 minutes, the charger, the swords, a couple of metal plates, some wire and some electrical tape. It is not going to get any more "Out of the box" than that. It is the same method used in films like "Highlander" and such. S'all I have. Gwyd |

Kevin james has a battery operated funken ring type
sparker that will do the job. I have used this myself. |

I have a sparker I got from Sylvester the Jester.
I don't use it anymore. If you're interested in buying it used, let me know.
