I have recently been working Christmas parties for large family groups. There is the usual half-hour Reception and then work around the tables during the meal.
I usually like to keep the Reception material different from that in the dining area (otherwise you are likely to be showing the same stuff to the same people). Because I knew that there would be children, I devised the following. I call it 'Santa's Roulette' and it occupies the children in the reception area while the adults are getting the drinks in! I set the presentation out on a table in a corner and I have a colourful Christmas Stocking filled with 'Luck Dip' type goodies. This is the 'Prize' bag. There are seven blank-faced playing cards, of which six have the word 'Lose' written on the faces and one which bears the word, 'WIN!' The cards are shuffled, turned face down and dealt out seperately onto the table. Each child is invited to play "Santa's favourite game - It is called, Santa's Roulette!" By using the PATEO Force (Point At Two, Eliminate One) process, every child wins! You will of course, have to put a secret mark on the back of the 'Win' card so that you know where it is once they are turned face down. But it is very easy to do and keeps the children occupied. And I promise you, they ALL want to have a go. When they win, they get to dip into the 'Lucky Dip Christmas Stocking' and take a prize. Some of the older children have the feeling that you are manipulating the result, but don't know how! Hope some of you can use it!
Stories....?....That's telling!

Great minds think alike, but I like your idea for the simplicity. Mine is called "Merry Christmas Carousel" and it appears in The Wizards' Journal #15. It uses eight cards, one "Brass Ring" which is the winner card, and seven "You Lose" cards. They are placed on the bottom of a home made paper Carousel that spins around with the cards sticking out from beneath the carousel. Any child can stop the carousel and point to any card, and when it is removed, it is always the "Brass Ring" so as in your effect, the child is always a winner, and never a loser.

I like to tell the kids they will win if I can't guess the number they are thinking.
I always say 1. most of the kids get the prize right away some of them say the number one to be silly and they go to the back of the line. I've had some of the kids cycle through the line 3 times before I turn the game around and have them guess what number I am thinking of... the always win What's funny is, a parent told me what a great magician I was to guess all the childrens numbers.

I used to do a walk around routine with a change bag where the children picked a lollypop from the bag. If they picked RED...they were good and would get a present this year. If they picked GREEN, they were NAUGHTY and would be getting cool.
Of course, the grown ups ended up with green lolly pops and the kids ended up with Red. |

Great ideas, all.
For some reason, I think red should be naughty and green should be good. No idea why though.. George |
