Having now seen the Kidabra, Ken Scott, James Moulton, and BJ Hickman birthday DVDs, I think that overall Scott and Moulton give you the best multi-faceted view of the business, crowd control, routining, and trick selection and skills aspects of the Birthday Biz (plus they each give some wholesaler supply suggestions). Kidabra and Hickman give good trick routines and ideas. Kidabra has an all-star lineup of magicians, but they each only contribute a smidgeon and it is a little frustrating. Hickman contributes his original style and approach (well worth watching and provides some ideas), but he doesn't quite give enough in the way of interpretation and should be watched more for performance than for learning the "biz."
In other words, as overall introductions, I think that Scott's widely known DVD, and Moulton's lesser known one (focusing mostly on teaching a birthday magic class) offer the best comprehensive introductions. I will soon screen Macrae's and also hope to get ahold of Leveridge and some others soon. What do Café members think? What other birthday show DVDs do you like and/or dislike and why? |

Hi,
The ken Scot dvd is good for the buisiness side but the performace /show is mediocre, to me it pales into the shadows compared to the show on the first Terry Herbert video/dvd. If you have a show as good as Terry's I think the Busineses will take care of itself lou |

Is James Moulton? Is that why he's not allowed on the couch?

Sorry.
Loved Birthday Dough; I find myself watching it again every once in a while just for fun, and to pick up little tidbits on the business side of things. Always get a little chuckle when I get to the part of the performance where you compare the young helper to Britney Spears. |

Ross Macrae also has great DVD and very comprehensive. He addresses the business side, buying tricks, routining, crowd control, and doing Bday parties. He has a great analytical way of "showing" you how to go through the process of adding tension to your tricks to make "out of the box" boring pattered stuff into kiddie fun. Macrae is low tech - he calls the DVD more of a coffee clatch talk than a big production - but it's quite good. And I think the classic, referred to even by a couple of these DVDS for kids' magic, is David Ginn's work. While Ginn's DVDs don't refer specifically to the B-Day business, they may still be the best shows on routining trick, at least that I've seen. I saw one of Herbert's shows and wasn't entirely thrilled, but may try another . . .

Ah yes shows you how long go we taped that. The brittney spears line was good back then she was young and very popular in a good way then.

Hey Ross, I just got your DVD in the mail today and I'm reciving it for Christmas. I wasn't able to borrow it like I told you I was, so I deceided to have my mom buy it as a Christmas present. When I finally get to view it, I'll be sure to tell you my opinion of it. Just looking at the cover of it makes me sense that it's gonna be a good DVD! And fortunantly, this post will put me at the 50 posts needed to have access to the banquet room!

How in the world do you expect to give an unforgetable, unique, original performance if you get all of your magic from a cook book?

The DVDs are just a start; provocation; food for thought on the trick/routining side. On the business/kid psychology/birthday party logistics side a cookbook is a great thing (why reinvent recipes that already work . . ?). But I agree w/regard to performance that one's own persona and creativity has to come into play. But you can only break and alter the rules after you know them, and what better place to turn to learn these, than to some our resident experts here on this board (even including you Al . . .).
