What about "The Magus," based on John Fowles's novel. Not a stage magician by any means, however.

The real horror at the heart of darkness, is evident when the narrator of the tale describes returning to Belgium, and consoles Kurtz's fiancee with a complete lie . . . from what I have read of the story of the novel of The Prestige, it is quite a different story, and a more supernatural story, than the movie. I will have to read the book before passing judgment, but the plot of the movie seems more focused to me.
By the way, NIGHTMARE ALLEY can be viewed in segments on YouTube, I think, and is well worth looking at. Tyrone Power and Joan Blondell are excellent in it. 100 actual carnival acts were employed as extras on a 10-acre carnival set. Quite an interesting production. |

I guess I was the only one that saw "Is Anybody there" with Michael Cain - yea, let's say a great digital moment!

In the many films of Japanese Detective Akechi Kogoro adapted from the fictional classics of Edogawa Ranpo, the protagonist Kogoro's main adversary is the so-called "Fiend with 20 Faces." The "Fiend" often dresses up as a magician with cape and top hat, and at first,he is thought to be a ghost but eventually found out to use stage-magic for his spooky disappearances. As a depraved psychopath, he even uses his stage-magic to commit murder, for example, using the Hindu Sword cabinet to sadistically skewer a victim for real. At first, the audience thinks the victim's screams are part of the act, but then get horrified when they see a dead corpse fall out of the cabinet with the multiple swords.
I used to see those movies during the 1970s when they premiered. Although I don't recall who played the Fiend with 20 Faces, I at least remember that the role of the heroic protagonist Akechi Kogoro made a huge star out of actor Shigeru Amachi. |

"The Prestige" was entertaining and well-acted, but it had a major credibility flaw, IMO. The dramatic crux occurs after a performance of "The Real Transported Man" where Borden sees (apparently) Angier disappear from the stage and (from a distance) reappear a second later in the back of the (moderately lit) hall. At which point, Borden becomes obsessed with discovering the secret, with disastrous consequences for all.
At which point, I call BS. No, Borden does NOT become obsessed with figuring out "how he does it." Because in real life, people don't teleport, and people don't get replicated. What would Borden do, if he saw "The Real Transported Man"? He would simply assume that Angier had found a better double, end of obsession. Because, as Cutter, ironically, pointed out when observing and deciphering Borden's act - accurately - the only way the effect can be accomplished is with a double. Sorry, Borden wouldn't spend more than 5 seconds thinking about Angier's act.
"Torture doesn't work" lol
Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley. "...as we reason and love, we are able to hope. And hope enables us to resist those things that would enslave us." |

I enjoyed both the "The Illusionist" and "The Prestige". I look at "The Illusionist" as a romance with Magic (plus any movie with Paul Giamatti is a winner in my book) and "The Prestige" as a Magic Fantasy. I think the main reason the two are lumped together is that they came out so close to one another...
One of my favorite TV movies was "Murder By Natural Causes", staring Hal Holbrook as a Mentalist with a heart condition. His wife and her lover plot to scare him to death. Lot of twists in the story that keep you guessing. It was written by Levinson and Link, who were also known for Columbo, among other things... |
