The ability to slow... to stop your pulse... dead.
To take yourself to another place and, for just a moment, cease to live... For others to experience the end of someones life... feeling the end creep up and, beat by beat, consume the life of another. buboom...buboom...buboom...buboom........buboom........buboom........buboom........ .buboom..............buboom..............buboom........................buboom...... .................buboom............................................................ ...................................buboom.......................................... ................................................................................... ............................................ Death... But... this is not the end... ................................................................................... .....buboom........................................................................ .....buboom............................................buboom...................... .....................buboom....................buboom....................buboom.... .....buboom..........buboom......buboom......buboom......buboom...buboom...buboom.. buboom...buboom...buboom You... are... ALIVE. This is Pulse. Effect/product: Pulse Performer/creator: Café' member jayb Format: Booklet Availabe: From various magic retailers such as mjmmagic, hocu-pocus etc, aswell as from the creators site http://www.whosmagic.com Price: $20 give or take, approx £10 What is Pulse? Pulse is another take on the pulse stopping effect. The Booklet: Before I get onto 'Pulse' itself, I'd like to start by giving my opinion on the booklet you recieve. Well to call it a booklet is a bit of an overstatement, it's actually more like a pamphlet/leaflet kinda thing, which literally consists of a few pages. It is not of the best quality, and does feel and appear to have been just kinda thrown together. Inside you'll find multiple grammatical errors, though I understand that jayb is not of UK/US origin and so does not natrally speak English... I wasn't really bothered by this, but it would have been nice to have had it checked etc as there are many who would like something they are spending there hard earned money on to have been proffesionally done, or at least to a good standard. There are a few pics throughout, and these are clear and easy to see... though are not colour, but then that doesn't matter, and they do there job. It's not hard to follow and understand everything within though, so the faults don't make this non-understandable etc. Booklet overall- Well to be honest the booklet just doesn't cut it, it's not good quality, and just feels lacking... so to speak. And for $20 it really should have been better done. Now me personally, as long as everything is understandable and clear, I'm happy... well for the most part, but this could have been done a lot better. I feel this would have been better suited to a pdf download or something, as I'm not sure there is really enough inside to warrant a paper back release. So overall one of the less appealing of manuscripts. Pulse: There are various methods for seemingly stopping ones pulse, some using a physical method, others pure suggestion and participation control. So... what does Pulse bring to the game... lets find out. Here are some points from the product ad- + Totally impromptu + No suggestion + No under arm gimmicks + Different from any other versions + Killer reactions + Anytime and anywhere So that's what's touted, now for my thoughts. My thoughts: This method to achieve the illusion of stopping your pulse is, as stated, completely impromptu, with no sggestion required (though this could be used to enchance the routine), and nothing more needed than a spectator and one of your arms... so if you have no arms this is not something you'll be wanting to purchase. The method taught is different to others ive seen in print, and from what I can tell from performing, will work 100% of the time to varying degrees. Now when I say varying degrees, I mean that your pulse may not appear to stop every time you perform, but it will certainly slow to a crawl. Also this method will work differently for each individual, some will find it easy and will have great success... while others may struggle to get a real noticeable difference. Now aswell as the main method, there is a subtlety that will enchance the effect to some degree, and it's this that, along with the main principle, will need to be taken advantage of for best results. This is not a sure-fire guaranteed complete pulse stop, and there are different factors which will change how effective this is... I feel this needs a strong presentation to get the best results, so someone who just wants to go up to someone and perform, well, this is definitely not for you as it requires the performer to really sell the illusion. Other things that may hamper effectiveness are anxiety, arousal, excitement etc so you need full confidence to get the most from this. As this requires nothing extra other than yourself and a spec, this is one of those things that can be done whenever the need/want arises... you could be naked... though if your naked and have company, well, there may be other things on your mind ...a penetration maybe Now though ive never seen the 'Pulse' method in print before, I'm not so sure that it is a new concept as, well, I think that it's something that quite a few are aware of, and have heard other members of the Café' talking about it in discussions. It's probably the way a spec would attempt it if you were to ask them to try. Also ive heard that Ormond Mc Gill (have no idea who this is lol) has done work on this method... though ive never seen it. In the Dim Mak manuscript, it briefly covers the use of this method and then goes on to say about who has the work on it, Ormond Mc Gill being named. Now there's more to it than just this one thing, but this one thing is a major part of the workings, and I'm not really that impressed with it myself. Though I suppose it doesn't really matter if it impresses me as if I was performing to impress myself... well... that's not what the magics about, and so the real test is how it plays in actual performance to others. I know a few different pulse stopping methods, and so went out to put 'Pulse' to the test, and to see how it compares... I really wasn't feeling it, the other methods were working much better and effectively, and 'Pulse' really needs to be done sitting to get the best results, which isn't always possible. When it worked well it worked really well, but at the same time I often couldn't achieve the desired effect... I found it to be pretty inconsistant. I can hit it basically everytime when home chilling etc, but in the trenches it's just, in my opinion, not that workable. Pros: Impromptu Cons: Not consistant. Will have varying degrees of workability, everyone will be different. Method was already known to me, I just hadn't used it due to thinking it wasn't that good. Overpriced. Teaching: The teaching itself is pretty good, jayb explains what to do cleaarly, and so there were no problems as to understanding what to do. The explanations were not overly indepth, but they got the job done. Difficulty: Different for everyone, and a lot of different factors come into it, such as nerves, excitement, worry, health, arousal, atmosphere etc etc etc... many things can influence the workability and effectiveness of this. Before giving an overall opinion, the 'Pulse' manuscript comes with a bonus routine... I'll cover that briefly and then give an overall. Pain: You cause the participant to feel no pain. In this you pinch the spec and ask if it hurts... yes it does lol... you now take away there pain, you pinch them again... nothing, you pinch hard, they can see the skin gripped tightly, yet they feel no pain at all... you now restore there sense of pain. I like this little piece a lot, it's such a simple effect, but one that works great and has a lot of potential. It's only briefly explained, but you'll understand the method instantly. This is completely impromptu, with just a participant needed. I like this one. Complete overall: I had high hopes for this, and though it's true this is impromptu, with no gimmicks etc... I feel it's not workable in the real world due to the inconsistancy and wealth of factors that can affect the workings. Also I knew about the method already, so was nothing new, and something which I just don't think is that good. 'Pain' is cool though. On another note, I feel the manuscript could have been more fleshed out, with a deeper look into the psychology and routining. I say to skip this, and either pick up Dim Mak or wait for 'Control' (though for all we know at this time, Control may not turn out to be good). |

I guess we will just have to wait for Control
Which looks exactly like (in segment of Stigmata DVD) Luke Jermay's non suggestive pulse stop in his Bigger Three writings. |

Y2John,
Thanks so much for your review, I always love reading your extensive, honest and very clear reviews. Good job. Like you said this is one of those effects that will be different from person to person. I really don't think it's something difficult and aside from other suggestion methods that have a 50% chance to fail, I can honestly tell you that Pulse never failed on any of my performances. I would say the method itself is very user friendly if you use it in the right way. I think it's a matter of giving it a good presentation and showmanship (like in every effect in magic) MagicSanta, Thanks for your comments and for enjoying the Bonus effect "Pain". If anyone has any question regarding this or any of our products, please don't hesitate to contact me. My best wishes.

Does anyone have both control and pulse? and if so how do they compare. I have a slight feeling they are quite similar.. or maybe not.
