Just to clarify, I'm not really talking about TRUE impromptu mentalism, (that doesn't mean that impromptu effects CANNOT be used, of course they can), what I'm talking about is walk-around for corporate events and at restaurants; etc.
It's just that I'm a great believer in... 1. The minimum amount of props, (so that your personality can shine like the star that you're meant to be), 2. Using everyday props, that means not carrying a hardback book or a clipboard; and, 3. Not putting anything down on the table! But these are my own personal stipulations, what you do is up to you! Basically if you can handle billets well, you have an entrie act. Look at Annemann. I wonder why people stay away from billets so much, and buy too much gimmicks.

I think "walk around" very much depends upon your venue. If I am performing in an environment with a loud band or DJ I usually put away my mentalism tools and pull out my sponge balls.
If I'm in an environment where I can be easily seen and heard I will usually perform hard hitting mentalism that can be done stand up and surrounded. Instant reset is also important. Three of my favorites are: 1)Coin bend. I use the QB2. This is very visual, quick and provokes enough interest where they want to see more. They often only want me to do this again but I persuade them to let me try something else. 2)My concoction of CT,PW,c**d r***ing, and startling revelation. Basically, I've predicted in advance a person someone knows. This is one of my favorites and is mind bogling to the spectator. They can not fathom how I could have known about their mother whom I've never met. I've often had spouses argue whether the other gave me the secret information ahead of time. I very often stop here, especially, if the OMG moments are very strong but usually follow up with one more. 3)PK Time/Osterlind Watch Routine. I consider this one routine and is always surefire. Again, I often save it for later when I'm asked for more. I think in walkaround less is often more. While I have a fairly extensive repetoir there is no need to perform all of it at one time. If I feel an effect has really had an impact I might end there and walk to another group. I will often come back to the original group if I see the interest warrents it. This time I'm presold of my abilities and am working with people that definitely want to see more. It is easier to maintain their interest for longer and equally impactful routines. It also enhances the art since people are asking me to perform rather than me pushing it on them. Steve |

On impromptu material...
I honestly perform my "K?NT" and "Red-Handed" because they are prop free and both work reliably for me. "Reflexology" is another fun, relatively impromptu routine I use. I also use a time effect of mine called "Sands of Time", which uses their internal "subconscious clock". This is a para-conscious awareness themed routine. All of these can be performed with just you, their mind and maybe a napkin (aside from "Reflexology"). I really like using Scott Guinn's "Assertive Positive-Negative", Larry Becker/Lee Earle's "Influence U" and sometimes Docc's "Evoque" or "Cellular Mitosis". Jimmy Fingers' routines are all great as well. All are great improvised routines. All of this material can be peformed (seemingly impromptu) with a business card case with your cards. That's why I use them so often. Sean |

Sean's stuff works great for walkaround mentalism.
His book Ponderings would be a treasure trove for the aspiring walkaround mystery entertainer. There are miracles in there, but only if you give them the study and focus neccesarry. D |

I do 3 routines which I accomplish with just one p**k. Then its all presentation , structuring, cold reading and hot reading.

If it's quiet enough to use a cell phone, Influence U2 is a killer effect.
Also just came across Oz Pearlmans great effect using a tape recorder (on his Into the Abyss DVD), just perfect for when there is ambient noise. Best Gerry

I'm not going to email Max Maven every time I give a credit, lol. However, next time I will type l***s, as I should have. My mistake. To stay on topic, I also find The Relic to be great for walkaround and good way to get people involved and having fun. |

Great insights guys!
For me, I tend to do routines that involves less objects: a couple of billets will do. Currently, I tend to perform billet works like peeking and stuff. Just trying to keep it simple. I might end up with Stigmata in my arms, or I might not. Drawing duplications goes second, and lying games go third. Alel |

BIP Version 2 is also good to have in your pocket. Small, clever and plays for up to 4 people at a time.

Ted Lesley's "Spectator As Mindreader" has served me very well over the years. I start the set with Jay Sankey's "Remote Control." My presentation has been tailored towards a mental magic theme.
My favorite, though, is a combination of Derren Brown's "Smoke" with Daniel Madison's "Fine Scripture" due to the fact that most places have banned smoking, and I am not a smoker. |
