James, if you work in other area's (cities) do you require a permit for each of them also. Or, is it only where your "place of business" is located??

In my area (Washington DC area, where magicians might find local engagements in DC, several Maryland counties and several Virginia counties) licensing a business in one jurisdiction is sufficient (unless you're in a closely regulated field like plumbers or electricians). Of course, the several areas vary in their tax schemes (but again, you only pay tax in the locale you're licensed in) and in the degree to which their bureaucracies are "business-friendly" (my own Arlington, they fall all over themselves making it easy to do business - DC, not nearly so much). |

Blair,
What I was told was that for LA city only, if you work 7 or less performances/jobs in the city, then you don't have to have a license. If it's over 7 jobs, then you are supposed to get one even if you are not based in LA city. For our surrounding cities--like Santa Monica, Culver City, etc.--they all have their own laws on this issue. It took them years for me to pop up on their radar and I have a feeling I have friends who are still under the radar. For cities where you are not based, it would seem to be hard for them to become aware of your acitivies if you are based in a neighboring city. This was the impression I got from what the city official told me. Jim
Oh, my friend we're older but no wiser, for in our hearts the dreams are still the same...

That sort of confirms what I was told also. The three levels of govt. don't really compare notes. So you can, as you say, fly beneath the radar! Even if you are declaring, and paying income taxes, as a professional performer

I have some that I think might help. If they do charge you taxes for your "business" then that means you can claim tax reciepts on ALL of you magic stuff. Although I do not think you are considered a business, if they make you pay taxes you can simply get most of your money back by claiming tax reciepts on all your magic tricks, books, DVDs, business cards ect. I am pretty sure that is how it works seeing as those would be your "business essentails" but if I am wrong please correct me (seeing as I am only 13).
