I recently came up with a 'new' effect, and I wanted to see if anyone had heard of it before. Just checking if it's original, etc.
Effect: Sitting, standing, etc, a magician removes a bic-type pen from a pocket and holds it about six inches from his eyes, at eye level. He stares. And stares. He gets some stares himself. Finally, just as people are looking away, the pen starts to bend. It is held at the tips of his fingers, in one hand. It is as if it melted. The pen is then fully examinable. I've truly had people be afraid of picking it up- for the heat! Yet the pen is cool to the touch, and hard. It can even be left with the person(s) that saw the magic. If anyone has heard, seen, or used anything like this, please let me know! I would be interested to know anything you can tell me. Thanks! |

Sam,
Quite some time ago I posted a method for this in the "The triple dare!" section here at the Café (it might have actually been "Secret Sessions", I'm not 100% sure), which I also shared with some folks at last July's Phoenix Gathering and at 72 Hours, the mentalism convention I produced in October. I can't publicly post details here, though, but once you earn access to those sections, check it out. I've refined the handling a lot since then, but the gist of it is there. One thing that I think I briefly alluded to there, but am not positive (I discovered this after the original posting) is that particularly with certain other brands of pens (you can do it with the Bic pens, but not as easily), this can be a completely impromptu effect with a borrowed pen. -Andy

Yup, that sounds like the one. Oh, well. Originality isn't everything. Thanks for the tip.

Don't sweat it :o) If we're talking about the same thing, while we both independently discovered the way of doing it with a pen, it's been done with nails, glass rods, and other objects for a verrrrrry long time! One of the earliest published PK bending effects was one by Annemann using this technique to bend a glass rod.

Sounds very interesting and I was just wondering how many posts do you need to become a regular user because I can't find out that yet.

Though a little different than what you have suggested, I recently saw Cornelius perform his bending pen. I'll admit, the ads didn't make make me think the trick would be all that, but I tell you, it brought down the house (and it was a pretty impressive house.)
I think passing out two or three pens to the audience, one of which being the Cornelius item, before doing your bend would be fun. Then pick up the Cornelius item and bend one they just had in their hands. |

Sounds awesome; I can't get in the secrets session yet (obviously), but I can't wait!
Its not what you do, but how you do it.
