This is a question directed to everyone new in magic.
What kind of magic are you privy to buying? For instance, street magic (in the Blaine sense of the word), parlor magic, close-up magic, stage magic...or whatever you might be interested in. Looking forward to your answers! Thanks, everyone!
Coming soon... Who knows!

I really believe that "Street Magic" in what would be called Blaine style is really not practical for most people, especially for those first starting out. Let me clarify by asking a few questions... What exactly is Street Magic? Good question... Does one need a camera crew in order to perform Street Magic? If not, do you really want to be alone and approach strangers in the street and try performing a magic trick for them? I truthfully believe if this approach is taken, you will soon be either mugged or locked up for disturbing the peace.
Just my take on Street Magic. I will be anxious to see what kind of answers you receive on your query.
If I were to agree with you. Then we would both be wrong. As of Apr 5, 2015 10:26 pm I have 880 posts. Used to have over 1,000

Two types.
For impromptu situations, I look for magic props that appear to be common objects. For more formal settings, props that I can build a story around, fits my personality, lifestyle, and may be interesting to spectators. Actually, I lean more towards books and other media than props. |

I don't look to buy much of anything. Buying can become a quick and costly habit in magic. I've learned over the years to think in terms of "does this really fit in and does it match my style of performance?" I never buy on site. I always try to find it performed somewhere, or at least demonstrated so I can see it in action. I also give it some time to think it over. Impulse buying in magic is far too common, especially among the new to magic folks. Mostly, I buy books.

I find myself buying in a wide selection. I look at it similar to buying STOCKS. I do not want to put all "MY EGGS" in one basket(lingo from Wallsreet...LOL). I definitely buy thiings that FIT my personality and crowd control. I am also very partial toward magic sold by Magicians that I relate to. Not to copy but molded to fit my style. I think another WIDE VARIETY positive is like what just happened to me. I will be doing a birhtday party for a friend in March. It was supposed to be in their house. However, if weather is good, they will be doing it at a Retreat and even possibly outside. As you can see, that's about as open ended as one could try to prepare for. I'm loaded no matter which way it goes:<)

I first started with close up, but quickly migrated to parlor.
But I have been recently told by two very experience magicians on separate occasions that I would be best served by doing restaurant magic. The reason why? I only need to learn 3 or 4 tricks. But more importantly I get the do each routine 15 – 20 times a night. Rather then 2 or 3 times a week. So for now I am working on what would be great in a restaurant environment. Being cautious not to buy too much. Why? Because of a closing comment that was offered to me: “It's not about the trick” it’s about, “If they like you or not”. “Find out what makes you a likable personality.” So far I haven't figured out a way to "buy" that.
An idea can turn to dust or magic, depending on the talent that rubs against it.

I have jumped into just about everything all at once this month, my toybox is full. I consider it an intro into all the schools of magic, and I am having fun in the process. I know eventually I will have 2 things: A fine collection of used stuff, and A better understanding of the kind of magic I enjoy the most. My wife says I may be having a mid life crisis, but would rather have me spend money on magic, than risking me becoming a street pizza on a new harley.

I started with card magic. Silly me when I started I asked a salesperson at a magic shop for " stuff about card tricks." He turned me onto Michael Ammar. I had no idea what I was getting into. Next thing you know I am performing DL's and Double undercuts, Elmsely Counts, and Olram Subtleties. Most fun I had ever had in years.
Then I went into Coins Got David Roth's Expert Coin Magic Made easy, and David Stone's DVD's. Then I saw A demo of Jeffrey Sanders Fiber Optics Extended, and have to say I fell in love with Rope Magic. It just seems perfect, packs small, plays big, and everyone can understand the Properties of a rope. I am learning Ring on Rope, and sent for Tabary Rope Vol 1 and 2. Because of Sanders. I gravitate toward non packet card effects, non-gaffed coin effects. Almost exclusively close up sleight-of-hand magic. I guess I enjoy the challenge and the pleasure of doing magic that is in the spectator's face. Basically anything I can borrow from a spectator. Although I agree that there is room in anyone's repertoire for gaffs, and gimmicks. I do McDonald's Aces. Although I am not hot on Gimmicks, and mostly focused on Cards and Coins lately I have been focusing more on Rope.. as mentioned above. And am getting my first gimmick Monday, Extreme Burn from Richard Sanders, mostly I like his teaching Style, and his personality. Also getting "SuperCards". Guess my gimmickless, gaffless days are done...but I'm having fun, and that's what counts About Street magic. While I do not try to gather a crowd, I do enjoy performing one-on-one for strangers. Usually I'd be practicing a sleight, and when I see someone seeing me and smiling, I get the impression they are " magic-friendly" and ask." Want to see something cool?" Not that I want to do a " Blaine" type of routine, but more to help conquer my fear of performing for strangers. I hope to perform part-time at some point, at least to earn money to buy better props, and more magic. " Spoken like a true addict " I guess... Do magic, to support my addiction of buying more magic instruction...so I can do even more magic... etc." Does the cycle ever end? lol

At first it's card magic. Then like many others, I do any kind of magic except card magic. Not long after that, I move into mentalism thing. After another few months, I realized that card magic is my soul (hahaha) so right now I do mostly close up card magic (Hi Mr Lorayne! I like your book). But I still love mentalism thing, just don't perform it right now except for special occasion.

I look for ANYTHING using any practical method that produces a pure and straight forward effect. Examples would be: Invisible Deck; Heiny 500; Two Ones to a Two; Triumph and Spellbound. Don't mind longer routines, but each phase must hit as hard as the phase before with all phases strong in and of themselves. Tabary's rope routine, etc. All best,
