There are lots of alternatives; hank balls, pulls, fingertips, false fingers, dye tubes, wand tips.
For the job of vanishing a 12 inch silk I like the TT best. I don't think there is an exposure problem. I think it mainly boils down to the fact that if you go on stage worrying about people seeing your fake thumb people will see (or deduce you are wearing) your fake thumb. |

I think the idea that I am failing to communicate is that even if children do not see the TT as soon as they see the silk, they will assume a TT if they are aware of it. They don't need to see a TT nor does a TT even have to be present for them to suspect it.
As for 'polite' children: - How do we KNOW there are not children who just don't say anything? We know about the loud, rude kids but how do we know the children are suspecting something. In marketing, there is a concept that, for every person who DOES complain, there are 20 more who do not and just hate you silently! Wouldn't the same be true for magicians? For every person who says they 'know' there must be others who don't say! |

Nick, I completely get what you are trying to say. I just don't see it the same way. In my mind, you are one of the most original and brilliant entertainers out there, on this occasion, I just happen to disagree and think your focus is misdirected (pardon the pun (if it even is one)). I actually find it a lot more fun to hammer through a difference of opinion with someone I consider a friend than have the stupid ego points that usually hang over any serious discussion interrupt an intelligent debate.

" Firstly, if some kids suspect a TT and you can go through the routine without them shouting it out, it is most definetly a success of sorts. So the "how do we KNOW" is pretty obsolete. The same number of kids "that know" are the same number of kids that leave "knowing". The second important point is that I believe you can perform a TT vanish without kids that know about a TT knowing you are using one so mentioning thumbs is reminding them of what they already know and working against the misdirection you have built up. The best example I have is this: A child comes up to me before a show and tells me about a magic tick he knows. He describes the hanky into TT trick. I ask him to not spoil it for the others. I do my routine using a TT and after the show I (misguidedly) thank him for not shouting it out. He looks blank and says "well, you didn't use a fake thumb" . I did,of course, so the point is; no matter how exposed they are to a TT they're not at all exposed to someone using it properly. I'm going to hunt out a clip of me using a TT. It isn't anything ground-breaking but is certainly enough to fool TT wary children that I really can vanish a handkerchief. George |

"Old Tom does just fine, and I've helped him at enough parties and programmes over the years to tell you that if done correctly and with good misdirection, they'll never know"
Thank you my love. What I have never told you is that I often use a false finger these days instead of a TT. That is how I manage to vanish a 24 inch silk. Don't tell anyone, please.
"Yes, Virginia, there really are people named Riddle...isn't that AMAZING! And to think of all the royalties I'm missing out on! SCANDALOUS!"

One of the most amazing visual vanishes of a silk uses a magic wand (with a s****g inside). It really looks awesome, the silk (which can even be examined if you really want) simply vanishes into thin air with the wave of the wand. Sadly, this product seems to be only made of poor quality. I bought one some time ago, and was thoroughly enjoying practising the vanish, amazing myself every time. But the darn thing broke before I ever had a chance to use it.
IF ONLY someone would produce one of these so that the parts were easy to replace, and the re-set wasn't all clumsy (as was the case with the one I bought), it would be the perfect answer to your problem, Nick. Should a kid ever shout out about the TT, you simply demonstrate the wand vanish, and that would shut him up! What a shame that in this day and age so many magic products are simply not well made enough..... |

Yes the FF, as Tom said, would probably stop your issues. The nice thing is they can be used in Finger Fantasy and with a little effort make a decent dye tube.
