I agree with mindpunisher. Do your audiences know that the material you're using is underground? The answer to that question should provide the insight you need to see that it doesn't matter what you do, just do it well and adapt it to yourself.

Last but not least, I get to enjoy it too - the applause, the inner satisfaction of having put myself out there with my own work and received positive reactions, and knowing that those routines were mine. However, often I have loved performing an effect, whether mine or someone else's, and the clever method, yet because I did not get the impact out of it that was up to my expectations, I have re-worked it until I have had to give up on it. The audience always comes first. Do we disagree, harishjose? |

Heh, most things that are amazing are out in plain sight - it is the wise who see it for what it is and its potential to use... and each modifies it based on who they are.

For some here, their audience is mostly other amateur performers. If they find an "underground" or little-known piece that allows them to mystify their friends, what's the harm in their being happy about that?

Yes, on occasion I love to entertain fellow magic and mentalism friends with material they are not familiar with. Who here doesn't?

As to there being nothing new, I'd disagree.
That doesn't mean that the old stuff isn't good, but there are some new things that are quite interesting. Jim's/Slim's email thing is a new idea and can be very powerful. - entity

The "secret" of being different is in your control at all times. As I have previously stated, if I buy an effect I read only what the principle is about. I never read the presentation supplied. From there I will conceive of my own presentation. If by chance it coincides with someone else it is truly a coincidence. For this reason I have always endorsed the book tests of Outlaw-Effects, such as Homicide, Manhattanville, etc. They let you create your own effect. It cannot be the same as someone else. Two performwers could present Homicide to the same audience on the same night and the audience should not know that they have seen the same effect. We are what makes us different, not some secret underground. If we read Corinda or The Trick Brain we will learn that there are only so many "different" things that we can do. It is only our presentation that is different. And as I'm told that the French say "viva la difference" or something like that. I agree. I am different just because I am me.
And you are different for the same reason. Thank God. |
