Anyone familiar with Jeff McBride's 'museletter' will also be familiar with Tobias Beckwith. He is a performer, actor, and director who is very closely allied with the McBride Mystery school. I should mention that I do NOT know Tobias personally, and I bought this full price at a magic shop.
This hardback book is (I believe) Tobias' first, and it is wonderful. It is a high quality book, nicely bound and printed, and the information inside is very valuable to the performing magician looking to make his performances mean more. At 119 pages it is not the longest book around, but it does not need to be. It challenges you to ask questions about your pieces, your character, your premise, concept and reasons. It guides you through the process of realising why you do any piece, and experiencing it in many different ways through the application of acting excercises that Tobias has adapted. This allows you to find out different things about the piece, yourself and your performance character. You can then apply this new awareness to the improvement of the piece. You may find that you were doing it perfectly for you anyway, but you are more likely to find new ways of approaching each piece, and new ways of presenting it. I have started to re-write my entire stage show as a result of this book. I now have a concept for the show that follows a proper dramatic structure, and means so much more than it did before. This book is so valuable. If you want your magic to be better, stronger, and more connected to you and your audience, get this book, study it, and do the excercises. This is a fantastic book that is well worth your time and energy. |

I'm also in the middle of this. It's a great book. I can't add anything to the review that psychicturtle didn't already say. It can do nothing but increase the quality of your performance (assuming you actually read it, do the exercises, and put into practice what you learn (tall order for many, I know)). It'd be great to see more of this type of book out on the shelves.

All I can say ,since its been said is, I totally agree with you. It is a small, easy to read book with a lot of important information in it and who of us doesn't need to improve our act.

This is one of those great books that not many have heard about. That's sad really. Hopefully, getting some reviews here will spread the good word. It's one of those things that 20 different people could read and get 20 different equally valid lessons.

I really enjoyed the book. I note that it is "Volume 1". Anybody know when we can look forward to a Volume from Beckwith?

I haven't finished reading this yet, but from what I've read so far I would recommend this book to anyone who needs help with putting together a show. I love all the theater excercises that he included.
