Well this is kind of personal, but maybe it'll help others like me in making other similar decisions.
Singapore will be holding the first International Festival of Magic from the 27-30th. of March. There's a series of lectures and performances being held during that time. Famous ones, like Max Maven, Eugene Burger, Abbi Spinner and Jeff McBride, will be making their appearances. As a novice who has only begun with cards, I am really excited with this event, especially the performances. But the difficult part is the lectures. The fee for participating all the lectures is S$190, which is quite a big amount to someone who's still schooling. I am sure that the lectures will be informative, but on the other hand, I am afraid that the information shared is out of my range of understanding. Any comments? Thanks for sharing. |

Nomis,
What's most important to you? I started going to conventions in 2002. I've made quite a few. I enjoy the performances. I also enjoy the lectures. Remember, you will probably not learn anything from the 'performance', usually. You will however get quite a bit from the lectures. Yes, maybe the lecture material may be beyond where you are at but most lectures contains a little something for everyone. Most people will lecture on material that is aimed at the layman. Stuff you can do with a little bit of practice. I understand money may be a factor. Don't be afraid to approach the lecturers on the side and see if they have any lecture notes left if you are unable to attend. Most conventions I've been to have one price for admission. Jim Molinari

Hi Nomis: One of the things you will begin to learn from the performers and lecturers at the convention is how to present your magic. When you see these great magicians, do not focus in on only the method of the effect, but how do they present it, i.e., their misdirection, script, etc. You will get a lot out of the convention if you do that, even though you are new to magic.
You will also meet other magicians ready to discuss magic with you (Somethimes all night), so do not be afraid to speak to other magicians in attendance. Further, do not be afraid to go up and talk with the performers and lecturers. Most, not all, are people who like to share. So, say hello to them and if you need a point clarified on something they did, ask about it. Hope this helps you make your decision.

Maybe you could pick and chose which to go to. do you have to pay the whole amount? if not just pick the magicians you think you would benifit from! all the best and enjoy!!
