Abraxus has just put out an Ebook, with Paul Bell called The Five Fickle Fingers of Fate. Am I ignorant, but I have not come acroos Mr Bell before - but I do know of Abraxus because I made an impulse buy of his booktest called 'The Hateful Page'. I really likes this one, as it gave a whole new slant to the booktest. Also it really fits my own style - to this day it is the only booktest I would perform.
So it was with some anticipation that I awaited Abraxus's first book of routines. This is a real good book. It has some excellent ideas in it and some real crafty thinking. So having digested it I looked for the reviews to see what you guys thought. Found a review on the Penny forum (where I lurk most of the time) by the guy who created the infamous Sanctum3. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......rum=15&4 Looked on this forum and found nothing. Strange. So I thought that I would post a heads up on this one here. I do not have time to write a full review (unless Abraxus really wants me to), also the review on Pennys seems pretty fair. I do not agree with everything Golde says - personally the grusomeness of the Jack the Ripper routine is one of the best things in the book. There seems to be a lot of good stuff to download at the moment - I have a huge backlog on my harddrive - I just hope that this one does not pass you all buy. (spot the typo - or...... was it an imbedded command?) Abraxus is a really inventive thinker, and I am sure this will not be his last offering - I do not think his future stuff will sell for the daft price he is letting this one go for. Oh, yeas - I got mine by PM'ing Abraxus direct. However, I noticed that it is available on Lulu.com (God keep me off that site - I am bankrupt).

There are some great and interesting ideas in there, Abraxus! (As you know) I am a fan of giving some standard tools new life so I really like what you did there. Very creative. Well done.

PSYCHIC CLUEDO!
Brilliant idea! Five Fickle Fingers is a great themed mentalism. I know Abraxus personality but haven't met Paul Bell - neither gave me a free copy (at least Paul has an excuse having never met me). Despite being tightwad Abraxus knows his stuff when it comes to mentalism. I don't know whether it is the spooky Victorian theme but reading through the book I picture myself performing these effect in some ginsoaked, gaslit, parlor (my living room) with a handful of friends for company (luckily my friends are very small). Although all the effects could be quite easily transferred to the stage. Gripes? I'm not a big fan of Jack the Ripper themed anything. Although in 100 years I'll probably be performing Peter Sutcliffe themed mentalism so it's a bit hypocritical of me. So 'The Whitechapel Messiah' wasn't really an effect to my taste but the thinking is solid. Favourite effect, just pipping Psychic Cluedo, is Echos of the Mind, a beautiful way of presented an effect. Full marks. Good work Abraxus. |

"some ginsoaked, gaslit, parlor" sounds like a fire hazard waiting to happen.
I agree, I enjoyed Iain's routines, the Jack the Ripper routine I'd probably adapt to some sort of Sherlock Holmes type presentation. Which reminds me I need to print it out and comb bind it so I can spill stuff on it and write notes all over.
