Hi guys,
You know when DC does Cardiographic when he has a hot female spectator on stage and he has her "come closer (she steps in) closer" then with glee he turns to the audience and says "hey. its my job". At first I thought it was DC's line then I saw Mr Osterlind use it. So obvious questions : who originated it and can I use it P.s other variation of it is : yea. I really hate my job (sarcastically spoken) Mac. |

I have noticed when it comes to patter in the working of effects, that many illusionists use similar catch phrases, as well as routines, allthough the effect might be diffrent. I however would like to point out that it is all the more important to try an set your own persona on stage, and your patter should follow. However, since it has been years (to my knowladge) since Copperfeild performed Cardiographic, I don't think to many people would notice, and it may be a good time to stick it into your act.

Be sure you have the personality and persona and also the way with the audience that you can pull it off effectively. That may make many women uncomfortable, and if you cause resentment or offense in any way it could affect your chances of booking future gigs.

That line, in one form or another, has been around for a long time.
What makes it work, however, isn't the line itself. It's how you say it. I've seen DC deliver it, and there's a very subtle buildup that recognizes the situation, relates to what the audience thinks about the situation (based on their reaction), and so forth. And then DC's timing and facial expression are perfect -- for him. That simple little line could be set up and delivered in such a way that you could say it in church, or that would get hoots and howls from an audience at a strip joint. Check out the thread right here on how to make lines sound natural. It's a good start.

Yes, I use that line all the time (and never knew anyone else did.) Here I thought it was my orginal stuff. Just proves there really isn't anything new under the sun. But one line is not a show. It's not like you stole a whole routine from start to finish.
