It's fine. No one's going out there teaching kids double lifts and bill switches - they're pretty much all very easy beginner tricks that usually come in cheap magic sets anyway.
James mentions that the one trick that some magicians have a problem teaching is the paddle trick, but I don't think it's a problem. I SWEAR TO GOD, this is a true story: I did my first Birthday magic class shortly after getting this DVD for my niece's party. Paddle and all. A week later I picked up a pencil and made the ink vanish off the side of it, and she went crazy playing with it to try and figure out how I did it. Really. A week later. So kids have a good time with this stuff, but they won't put two and two together and figure out that you're using the same method for a different trick (if they even remember what the method was).

I've just watched the DVD, and have to say, it's pretty good. It doesn't NEED to be a birthday occasion - that's just a hook to get someone to pony up a jumbo slug o' cash to keep the kids entertained for an hour or so.
I'm going to advertise it along with my other services as a "Hands on Workshop for the 8 - 11 yrs old" - and hold it wherever I choose. In the school holidays. I'll also offer it as an alternative to the parents when I get the kids birthday party enquiries. if you're the slightest bit interested in expanding your kid show business, get a hold of this. You'll get your cash back and more on your first gig. You really can't want more than that. Regards, DCB Posted: Sep 17, 2008 3:30pm One other thing I forgot to mention. I wonder about the idea of performing a trick/then explaining each trick, rather than performing a complete set and then, explaining the set? I see the point of doing it trick by trick.. but it DOES break up the party flow a bit. I suppose the argument would be that you'd have to re-cap each trick after the show.. Anyone got any thought on that? Regards, DCB

I've tried both ways and one trick at a time works best for me..... we don't move on until everybody has put their trick away in their bag.

If you wanted to shake it up a bit I'm sure you could do a couple of tricks and then explain them, but in terms of teaching them and having the children remember the tricks doing them one at a time would certainly make the most sense.

James,
Since you no longer offer it on your site could you tell us a bit more about the waistband amplifier used? Wattage, brand, etc. Thanks, Owen

I have not seen the DVD but wanted to mention that I just saw James perform for the first time. He did a bit at the Dallas magic club meeting this week. I had not seen him or ever heard of him before then so I saw him through the eyes of a typical attendee in his show.
Very good! Really enjoyed his talent. So I have to believe his DVD's would be very good as well. Carl

Thanks Carl! The DMC is a great group.
I strongly recommend doing one trick followed by explanation. I've found it just works much better that way. The waistband amplifier was put out by RadioShack a few years ago. They discontinued it and I was able to get them to ship me about 100 of them which I sold until they were gone. I wish I had hung on to a couple, because mine eventually conked out. I've tried finding another source. I tried the Hisonic ones but they weren't any good. There is an Anchor product which I might try, but it seems very expensive for what it is. It's important to protect your voice. I completely lost my voice after a very busy month in July. It took a week to return and I had to cancel a few shows. Very scary to open your mouth to speak and have nothing come out. Especially when you like talking as much as me! Best, James |

I have James dvd and liked it.
Btw, the Google "Shopping" link will show alternatives for buying the aforementioned waistband amp. Peace, Tod

I really like James' Magic Class DVD. He offers some great ideas and practical ways to teach a class. Like any magic DVD, however, I would not copy everything verbatim but use it as a jumping off point for developing my own techniques. If you get a few ideas from James' DVD and add other ideas from other sources plus your own additions, you can develop an excellent children's magic class.
As for the instant book, James has several. I have used his kids magic book for a couple of years and find it increases revenues at birthday parties and shows such as Cub Scout Blue & Gold events. I added a couple of pages of my own using clip art to add a few more "magical" tricks. The beauty of the book is that you can put your own name and information on the front and back cover and inside pages to personalize it. Disclaimer: I consider James a good friend, so I may be a bit biased, but I have used and gotten much out of his DVD and book. I've also have the honor of following him as president of a local IBM Ring and SAM Assembly in the Washington, D.C. area, so I can testify to the fact that James has given much back to the magic community. |

Thank you, Larry! I appreciate the kind words, my friend!
Tod, I'm not sure I understood your post. Do you have a specific link for the waistband amps? Best, James |

Looks like I'm about 5 years late here, but I wonder if anyone can recommend any of these waistband amplifiers:

The James Munton course really works. I used James' course last year and it gave me enough great ideas to use it as a basis for this years Summer camp course.

I second that but my copy is damaged and I can't watch it on my DVD player. Does anyone have a spare copy they'd like to sell? I also posted this on DVDs for sale forum but no answer. Please PM me if you can help!
