Mike,
You gotta find a way. There are a TON of guys coming up from toronto, and I might be able to find a lift for you. Also, find someone to share a room with and you'll save some dough. On a different note- I saw David Acer tonight doing Stand-up in a comedy club as the headliner. I almost ****ed myself. He had me and the rest of the audience CRYING he was so good. He closed with a fantastic routine using 6 different people from the audience that had a TON of byplay and was SIMPLE, EASY, and taught it David's lecture. I hope you guys get a chance to see it! Ben

Wow, what a great weekend.
Lectures by: James Biss, David Acer, Jay Sankey, Anthony Lindan, Dave Merry, Ian Quick and Johnny Thompson. Stage show in the Frewin Theatre with: Greg Frewin, David Peck, David Acer, Wes Zaherick, Glenn Ottaway, and THE GREAT TOMSONI AND COMPANY Plus some free food. That has to be the most value packed convention I have ever been to! (It was only $150 early bird) |

A great fiend of mine got to help Johnny with his Vernon impression. I know he thoroughly enjoyed it! Any chance of a review of the convention? I bet it was great.

I just attended the Niagara Comedy Magic Seminar and thought I'd report a little on the event. It was fantastic. It was so refreshing to be at a magic 'convention' that was not the standard fare. In addition to having an all-star lineup (Johnny and Pam Thomson, David Acer, Jay Sankey, Greg Frewin, etc), and taking place in a great facility (Greg Frewin's new theater), the organizers of the event took great pains to ensure that this was not just another magic convention. The magic community doesn't need just another convention with the same old format.
True to the stated goals of the event, the focus was on learning how to incorporate comedy into one's magic - not just learn another trick. The lectures were so much more than "Here's a trick, here's how to do that trick. Repeat." Some of the presenters showed and taught tricks, but always as an object lesson on why and how the comedy worked in the presentation. Jay Sankey's talk only included one trick, the rest of the time he spent discussing how he approaches the use of comedy in the performance of magic. He spoke about the importance of being 'in the moment' when performing, and how being aware of the people and events around you can lead to incredibly funny observations. Johnny Thomson's lecture was an invaluable glimpse into the life of a long-time working pro, and he discussed at length the evolution of the Great Thomsoni character. On the last morning, David Merry led a 'works-in-progress' session in which he invited attendees to show one of their evolving pieces and then we all brain-stormed how to improve it. Any one of these talks would have been worth the entire price of the seminar. I applaud Anthony Lindan and David Peck for sticking their necks out to offer a seminar that is not standard fare and I feel sorry for those who missed this great event. Dan Trommater |

I am still kicking myself over this one. I missed out on pretty much EVERY SINGLE LECTURE, and I WORK AT THE GREG FREWIN THEATER!!!!!
Mind you, because I was actually WORKING, I was actually being payed to be there , but still, I was gonna come and pay for the lectures, but I'm in the last few weeks of my final year in college, and had way too much work to do. One hell of a busy week end. Wake up, go to school and edit for 6-8 hours, go to work at the convention for 4 hours, stay up jamming until 4am, then repeat, lol. I even threw my back out and ended up in the hospital as a result of this weekend, lol. But it was worth it just to get to shack the hand of The Great Thompsoni.

Hey, I remember in the lobby at the IBM convention in Miami, you were entertaining a kid and his dad in the lobby (some impromptu coin work). I stood by and watched, and it was really cool. I had my son with me, he was 15 at the time, and I told him to make sure he watched and learned from you. He told me that he will never forget the look on that kid's face - he said that what you did was real magic, and he wasn't talking about the sleight of hand (which was awesome). Thanks for inspiring a up and comer!
