This has been posted before about a LADY. This time the magician . . . . . (also the first time I've seen the lady interviewed)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=TGt1mmY94NI&feature=related looks like it really really hurt.. . Anyone else (besides lorenzo) have had similar issues with this one? |

Who in their right mind would ever put a volunteer in any danger? If you this type of effect, you do it to yourself. This is totally irresponsible on the part of the performer.

I didn't see the spectator in danger. Just the magi. Did I miss something?

Never mind! I just watched the rest of the clip. OMG! That was absolutely the worst thing I can imagine a performer doing. Completely and totally irresponsible. The suspense should be about you as a performer, not the fear for the spectator. Bad performance regardless of the mishap.

It makes you feel bad for the spectator because she was fighting her fear the entire way.

Now she'll be scared of magicians for the rest of her life...God! That must have hurt!!!!! Did they go to court for that?!
Now, each time I'm going to watch this effect, I'll be scared for real... Eric |

There is always a potential to screw this trick up. I always highly discourage using it when younger magicians ask me about it. As magicians, our hands are our tools - and we shouldn't jeopardize them.
...And it's one thing to be irresponsible enough to perform this trick yourself, much less on a spectator. That's a law suit waiting to happen. Actually, that's a lawsuit that probably DID happen. I can't say that I would blame the person for suing in this case though. Does anyone know who the magician in the clip is? Lyndel |

Lyndel, You are right. Accidents can always happen, but if you make your living performing magic you don't want jeopardize your hands. There is another tread going on about a performer who has a broken wrist and is looking for effects that they can do with one hand. The advise that he is being given is to have someone else cover the performance.

No one in their right mind should ever put the spectator in danger. If anything in my show seems dangerous to the spectator involved, you can be sure that that's not really the case. I have a manufacturing background and am a stickler for safety procedures. I've even stopped my kidshow, if a toddler wanders on stage. I don't want the kid to topple something on himself.
As for the magician putting himself in danger, I don't think these guys understand an important concept. The show is supposed to be about illusion. If the danger isn't just an illusion, then people shouldn't step up on stage with this moron, when he needs an audience volunteer. Other performers should rip him a new one, so that he gets the point that he's wrong! If he fails to admit that he's wrong, he deserves to go out of business. |

In another post about exposure, I brought up that "Man 1" should be an option to take care of those magi who have fallen by the wayside.
I take it back. With exposures,APPARENTLY we can create a sort of back-up system. See, we are actually SAVING HANDS by having the spectator give us a second opinion! FORESHAME ! Ok, time to step on my soapbox. Those considering a russian roulette type of performance, it's Scott Alexander's "Shattered" all the way. You're hands are your income people and it's stupid to have something go wrong once to living a lifetime of scrubbing toilets til your dying day. You wanna take this a step further? To paraphrase Jeff McBride, if you DO decide to do a Russian Roulette, what DOES that say about you as a person? |

I personally know 3 people this has happened to......
Such a stupid risk for 1 trick. Sure its intense and gets reactions... But come on.. As magicians our HANDS ARE OUR LIFE!!!! I think its ridiculous Magician have the weirdest driven egos around their peers. One of the magicians this has happened to actually said to me: ``Sure I stabbed my hand in front of an auditorium full of high school kids...But Eric.... they will remember me forever!!`` are you kidding me?! ugh |

I agree. In fact we magicians STILL talk about Chung Ling Soo today. There ARE better "grails" folks. Roulettes are EXACTLY roulettes (ok, except for "Shattered". Oh, and I'm not a paid endorser for Mr. Alexander, it seriously is 100% safe.) |

Why do magicians insist on treating spectators like this? I've never seen a good reason for these types of effects.
I hope those guys had insurance.. |
