I read this interview from beginning to end.
Uri is very careful with his words, especially with the "i have powers" stuff. It's amazing what mentalism + charisma can do to your life. Maybe one of us will be given instructions from the next US president to find oil. |

Uri Geller: Do a research. Because I got a direct call from Bill Casey, and he asked me a question. He was in Washington, I was in Palo Alto. And he said, "Mr. Geller. I'm holding something in my hand. Can you tell me what it is?"
I get phone calls like this from time to time too. I find the best technique is to put the phone down calmly. |

Anyone read German? I would love to hear what he actually said from "Oh Uri, is it true, that you said that you're not a psychic to a German magic magazine?" And this is my answer – listen very carefully: I never said that I´m not a psychic. You must listen to my words. Read my words, what I said." Published in http://www.zem.demon.co.uk/mwuri.htm
He's such a name dropper! "Jimmy Page has moved next door to me. You know Jimmy Page, the guitarist from Led Zeppelin?" "You know who Richard Branson is? I was flying with Richard Branson when he opened his new airline." "You know who God is? I was giving him a few tips when he came to one of my book signings." |

I think a reasonable translation of Uri words in magischeWelt ("Ich behaupt nicht mehr, dass ich übernatürliche Kräfte besitze. Ich bin ein Entertainer") would be:
"I will no longer say that I have supernatural powers. I am an entertainer" Any German speakers here are welcome to improve on it. Later in the same article he adds: "Noch mal, ich bin kein Zauberer." - "Once again, I am not a magician" All clear so far? |

Very clearly ambiguous! He will no longer say that he uses supernatural powers, but it doesn't mean he doesn't have them. Will never say that he is a magician or psychic, but IS "a mystifier".
Still, my hat's off to Uri. Danke Steve |

I rather enjoyed this article and interview.
I've always liked Uri and likely always will. I do find his new disclaimer interesting . . . does this earn him any better a position in the minds and hearts of skeptic mentalists? What if John Edward were to come out and say something similar (it won't happen, this is just a question . . .)? Would that in any way, shape or form make what he does go down easier? Intrigued, JF

Love me or hate me but I see Uri Geller as an Andy Kaufman type. Regardless of what he or she personally believes, there is a public persona which is the only side people get to see.
In writing this, I decided to check out the Andy Kaufman wiki entry and feel I am even more justified in the comparison. From the page: Quote:
Kaufman and Lawler's famous feud and wrestling matches were later revealed to have been staged, or a "work," as the two were actually friends. The truth about it being a work was kept secret for more than 10 years after Kaufman's death, until the Emmy nominated documentary, A Comedy Salute to Andy Kaufman, aired on NBC in 1995. Had Andy lived longer, perhaps the true nature of his "feud" would never have come out. In any case, what really changes? Nothing but publicity IMHO. Smart, smart businessmen, both of them. |

It sounds interesting that about Mexico.
My father told me that he camed to Mexico because he was in an affair with the First Lady of that time. But by reading this I think it was only a excuse. |

"...does this earn him any better a position in the minds and hearts of skeptic mentalists?" Is there any other kind, or at least to an extent? I mean we all have our beliefs and quite a few magicians and mentalists have put out serious books on them, on the powers of the mind and so on, but, is there a single mentalist that thinks spoons can really be bent by PK? I don't mean just in their internal script. With Uri, I've always liked him; I think he's harmless and probably a little more stable than he was in his extraterrestrial period. Absolutely, smart business men. Seems to me, Uri's battled internally and wants to be more congruent in what he really believes with what his wider persona is in any case. That's an important thing and good on him. I would imagine almost everyone here owes Uri a huge debt in his implanting psi ideas in the imagination of the populace. I think what's loathsome (to me) about some psychics (and yes people such as Sylvia Browne and the like do flash to mind), is they mix such a poor quality deception, they seem so artless and like they barely believe it themselves, aided by such vulnerable people, so desperately easy to exploit in the midst of their grieving process and they are seemingly so purely motivated by money, ratings and self-interest. A more reasonable disclaimer there may diffuse some of the hatred toward them and give some of those directly caught up in their spell room to doubt and move on in that way. Contrary to that, I have seen some very good ‘counselling’ work done by others, that’s clearly helped the individual concerned so much (temporarily though, who knows)and at very least seemed to be heartfelt and caring. --- Incidentally, I came across one of Uri's psychic hardback books today. Awful, just awful, best money I never spent! |
