I did a search already and came up with some info.
But I would like to know what exact thread do you use for YOUR Gypsy Thread routine and where do you buy it? Yes, I made a trip to Joanns already. Not interested in floss. Camirand thread a little expensive. So if you would share that would be great. Thanks-Nez

Barry beat me to it. Cotton basting thread is how to go. It snaps easily so you don't get wear and tear on your fingers.

Geoffrey Durham goes into great detail on his version in his new book (http://www.geoffreydurham.com/).
In the UK Chadwick's Mending Cotton or Chadwick's Mending Yarn is a good choice.

I have some of the Camirand thread. While it may be visible in a theater it's like trying to break piano wire......

I have used yellow cotton thread for years and as Eugene Burger says, it doesen't tangle and yellow has good visability.
I love this effect, Steve |

I get the little travel sewing kits that come with about 25 different little spools in different colors. I carry about 10 with me in one pocket, weighs less than one ordinary spool, so it can be a roving effect. I couldn't care less about the material. I'm sure it's cheap poly, but it breaks extremely easy in my hand (though I use a pocket knife most of the time anyway.

You can use white cotton thread and color it with a highlighter. I just cover the top layer on the spool with the highlighter ink, and it glows just like Camarand thread. After a few uses, just color the top layer again.

There are several different kinds of basting thread. One is a fairly thick thread, which is the thread that Ted Lesley used. This was visible at very long distances. Regular basting thread is fine for living rooms and small halls, but get 40 feet away, and it really doesn't show up well.
Ron Dayton recommends wicking yarn. Dick Hatch recommends "punch yarn."

I did get the Camirand thread and it's perfect. (kind of expensive)
And I've looked through the thread in the local Michaels and such and have not found any thread that thick. I don't know the source for the Camirand thread but that's the ticket.
