I am very new to street magic and was wondering which books are good, I'm looking for where to go, how to put together routines, how long to have the show etc.etc. I know of Street magic by Whit Hayden (sorry, I don't know how to spell that) and the video by Cellini. Are there any other good ones and how good are these?

Hi Redstreak.
Cellini's video is fantastic and takes you through street magic step by step. David Groves also has a good book on street magic by the same name. At least I found these two very helpful. Regards, Brady |

Greetings and Salutations Redstreak,
By all means get Cellini's video, it's not so much about street magic as about working the street. To back that up, track down a copy of Cellini's "The Royal Touch," it delivers similar information but is also loaded with Cellini's street-tested tricks. I believe the book is out of print and getting to be hard to come by -- someone please correct me if I'm wrong on this. I got my copy from Hank Lee's about a year-and-a-half ago for 80 (USD). Between the video and the book you should be set. Whit Haydn started on the streets and his book is excellent. Micheal Rubenstein has/had a small booklet out with some interesting takes on working the streets and effects. To get some great history on street magicians look at Street Magic by Jeff Sheridan and "?" Claflin, sorry, I don't recall his first name. Groves' book is OK, but it's kind of street performing lite, IMHO. These should give you everything you need to get started. There are others but they are either scholoarly or historical and all are scarce commodities. Have fun learning to play in the streets. Joe in KC Make magic happen, live a great adventure! P.S. If anybody can clue me into where to find a cost-effective copy of Hocus Pocus Jr., I would appreciate the tip. Thanks. |

Here are a few titles for buskers:
Drawing a Circle in the Square by Sally Harrison-Pepper. This is a great book about the performers in Washington Square Park. It includes a description of Tony Vera's act, and has some great info on structuring an act. Passing the Hat by Patricia Campbell. This is a less rigorous work than the one above, but it's very entertaining & has a chapter on magic. Some of the magicians that are quoted are Harry Anderson and The Amazing Jonathan. Street Theater and Other Outdoor Performance by Bim Mason. Another great book on street performance. It describes different types of acts and different styles. Discusses different methods for gathering a crowd, keeping them, etc. Web Sites: http://www.performers.net |

Three great books Riff!
Drawing a circle also profiles one of the greatest buskers that ever lived Charlie Barnett. Charlie came >< that close to being on Saturday Night Live but lost the gig for all the wrong reasons. Charlie was the best, unfortunatly the only film that I know of that exists of him are a couple of lousy movies he did. DC cab being one of them and How I got into college or something like that being the other. All the books you mention are great though. Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! Danny, et. al.,
http://www.imdb.com/ will connect you with a swell movie site. Look under Charlie Barnett II and you'll find a listing of the films and TV shows he appeared in. - Bill

I second Whit Haydn's book on Street Magic. Whit even talks about ways to make a buck even when you can't draw a crowd because of weather, cops, etc. I got my copy autographed by the man hisself recently!
