K-O
For a little history, my father done magic for years, performing up until about 20 years ago. Now, he has gotten into it again seriously. I on the other hand, have grown up with magic. Knowing the secrets (dabbling a little but never really working on presentation) watching for sleights, and being impressed by the skill. Now, I would like pick up magic seriously as well. So my question is two fold. First, what are the staples every magician should have? My father has led me to thumb tips, sponge balls, Scotch and soda, silks. But what else should be there? I realize that there will be differences, but I'm convinced there is a commonality between magicians. Second, as far as my father is concerned, what are the "new" staples that every magician should have? 20 years changes a lot. Thanks for the responses! Phil |

Not a lot of change, the tt, silks, sponge balls are still the same, it depends on what you want to do. Hopping halves is a great one if you are going to do coin work, a Sh**l also for coin work. Cards, Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic, Cups and balls, rope, scissors, Wand. Mostly it depends on your style of magic, stand up, close up, stage, illusion, coins, cards, busking, mentalism (most mentalist pack their act a gallon size zip lock bag.

Hello Phil,
I'd have to say you have most of the "essentials" for magic as a hobby. Belive it or not, nothing much has changed with the staples of magic, the originals will always stay the same, however the routines will always get better. However illusions have changed ALOT in 20 years. But I guess that's not for you. Good luck with the magic, the best advice I can give you would have to be; take a trip down to your local magic store and talk to them, they can be ALOT of help. Good luck! Zach |

Okay. So, I'm off on the right track. My dad has recently picked up D'Lite and Abyss, and I really like those two. Any ideas on some of the newer effects out there?

Technology has made certain things possible that weren't possible before, but the principles of old still hold true. Presentation, misdirection, routining, timing, these are all just as important as before.
If you work on the old effects, you will be surprised at how many people, including magicians, you can fool and entertain. There are these really cool new effects, but there are plenty of cool old effects. One of the most popular effects amoungst magicians is the cups and balls. This effect is really old with records of it on ancient documents and carvings. But having new toys is fun, check out the Café, you will get a ton of advice on what to do.

Reading the Café topics, the most common staples for magicians are cards and coins.
A somewhat newer props are IT, EIT and ITRs. Like photius says,"Mostly it depends on your style of magic, stand up, close up, stage, illusion, coins, cards, busking, mentalism...". You haven't mentioned the type of magic you would like to focus on or what your goal is. IMO, more important than the staples are understanding the principles, misdirection and other factors that make magic work for the public. |
